Abstract
455,440. Testing alignment of vehicle wheels. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., 32, Osnaburgh Street, Euston Road, London, and HARDMAN, J. H., c/o Dunlop Rubber. Co., Ltd., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. May 21, 1935, No. 14792. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for measuring " toein " or " toe-out " of vehicle wheels comprises angular channel section beams 1 and 2 carried or pivoted on uprights 3 and carrying wheel rim contacts 4, one at least being slidable by the thumb screw 5, the beam 2 carrying a mirror or steel reflector 6, which may be tiltable, and the beam 1 having pivoted to it a T-shaped member 7, the head of the member 7 having sights 14 and 20 at either end and the stem of the member 7 forming a pointer 9 moving over an arcuate scale 11 positioned on the beam 1. The sight 14 comprises a wire in a vertical slot 13 above which is an aperture 15 in a box 16 containing an electric lamp 17 and the sight 20 comprises a slot in a horizontal plate 19 beneath which is a reflector 21 at an angle of 45‹ to the horizontal. When the apparatus is used by day the aperture appears black and the wire may be painted white to show up against it, but when used at night the aperture may be illuminated by the lamp to show the wire as a black line. The reflector 6 may be fixed at an angle to the beam 2 and the pointer 9 may be inclined to the head of the member 7. Measurements can be taken in other than the straight ahead position of the front wheels by having the reflector mounted on a pivot. The reflector and the sighting means may be detachable.
