Abstract
454,279. Alighting-gear for aircraft. DOWTY, G. H., Arle Court, Cheltenham. April 17, 1935, No. 11917. [Class 4] A mounting for a tail-wheel or the like for aircraft, comprises a unit for supporting the wheel resiliently and for castoring and adapted to be attached to the aircraft by a bearing so it can be rotated as a. whole for retraction, means being provided for causing such rotation. As shown, a tail wheel 1 is carried in a fork 2 carried by a member 3 which can telescope within a tube 4. The tube 4 houses resilient and self-centring arrangements, e.g. as described in Specification 431,042. The tube 4 is rotatably mounted on an axle 8 by means of a bearing. The wheel is retracted or extended by supplying fluid under pressure above or below a piston 10, the piston rod 11 of which is connected by a link 14 with an abutment 15 on the axle 8. The mounting is held in operative-position by a spring- pressed plunger 21 provided with a locking- pin 20 which is guided in the member 24. This lock is withdrawn by the fluid supplied to operate the jack 9. The locking may be done hydraulically and a lock may be provided to hold the wheel retracted. Fluid may be led to the jack 9 either through pipes or through a rotary coupling within the bearing 7.
