521,161. Aircraft landing-gear. DOWTY, G. H. Nov. 9, 1938, No. 32575. [Class 4] An aircraft landing-gear comprising a pillar with a wheel-carrying lever pivoted to its lower end has a shock absorber acting on the lever which is at least partly enshrouded by a hollow portion of the lower extremity of the pillar. Where the wheel is steerable or has a castor action, means are provided for centring the wheel when the load is removed or upon actuation of retracting gear. Fig. 1 shows a tail wheel mounted in a fork 6 pivoted to an offset bracket 4 on a pillar 3 swivelling in a sleeve 28. A shock absorber 9 is pin-jointed at 10, 11 to a bracket 8 on the fork 6 and to the sleeve 3. The sleeve 28 is pivoted to the aircraft frame at 31 and carries a lever 27 to which a bell crank lever 25 is pivoted. One arm of this lever is connected to a jack 29 and the other to a link 24 which is connected by a pin 23 to a sleeve 19 carrying a locking pin 20 for engaging an eye 21 on the aircraft frame. The sleeve 19 carries a cam 18 which cooperates with a cam 16 on the pillar 3 to centre the wheel as the pin 20 is withdrawn. The pin 20 is withdrawn by the link 24 upon initial movement of the jack which simultaneously disengages the pin 23 from a notch in an arcuate guide 33 on the frame, further movement of the jack turning the sleeve about the pivot 31. For a front steering wheel the axis of the pillar 3 is inclined forwardly and is arranged to pass through the wheel axle when normally loaded. The wheel is detachable by removing blocks 13. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the fork 6 is connected to a piston 39 in a shock absorber cylinder 42 by a link 37 having a ball end 38. The piston forces oil through restricted passages in a partition 40 against air pressure. A centring cam 36 is pinned through slots 46 in the link 37 to a block 44 acted upon by a spring 47 so that under no load the cam 36 is resiliently held against a co-operating cam 35 on a fixed sleeve 42.
