Abstract
454,037. Vitreous enamels and enamelling. HARRIS, H. H., 809, West Church Street, Champaign, Illinois, U.S.A. May 10, 1935, No. 13820. [Class 56] [See also Group XVIII] A rustless ferrous metal panel, sign, moulding, or other article formed with a design in relief is enamelled, during the heat-treatment to develop the rustless property, with a high-melting-point vitreous enamel in one or more colours, and the relief design is ground and polished to remove any enamel thereon and expose the bright metal. For steel containing say 8 per cent nickel and 18 per cent chromium, the enamel is chosen to fuse at 1800 to 2150‹ F. Two suitable enamels melting at about 2000‹ F. are, in percentages, (1) white lead 45À01, feldspar 25À74, zinc oxide 4À95, quartz or flint 13À86, calcium carbonate 5À94, iron oxide 1À5, cobalt oxide 3À0; and (2) silica 28À85, soda ash 10À63, lead oxide 39À30, cobalt oxide 0À97, manganese oxide 3À05, potash nitrate 16À33, red iron oxide 0À87. Other rustless steels or irons may require a heat treatment as low as 1200‹ F., and an enamel is used having a corresponding fusing point.
