Abstract

533,461. Making coloured glass articles. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Nov. 7, 1939, Nos. 29552 and 29553. Convention dates, Dec. 5, 1938, and Dec. 7, 1938. [Class 56] A coloured glass article is made of a borosilicate glass containing an oxide of lead or copper, and colour is obtained by reducing the oxide in the surface of the glass to metallic lead or copper by heating the article in a reducing gas such as hydrogen or methane. Selected areas of the coloured surface can be removed to expose the uncoloured interior portions of the glass to produce a vari-coloured article. A suitable glass is composed of approximately 71 per cent. of ScO 2 , 6 per cent. of PbO, 5.0 per cent. of Na 2 O, 16 per cent. of B 2 O 3 , and 2.0 per cent. of Al 2 O 3 , but a number of other compositions are given in the Specification. The removal of portions of the coloured surface may be effected by engraving, sand blasting &c. or a design may be impressed on the glass and the parts in relief subsequently ground off and polished. Alternatively, a design may be formed by preventing reduction of selected areas by the application of a suitable resist, such as powdered zinc mixed with a suitable binder. In the production of a hollow article, the interior may be protected from reduction by sealing the open end of the article or by placing the open end in a suitable fluid during the treatment in the reducing furnace. Luminous signs made up of electric discharge tubes may have parts of the tubing blackened by reduction for blocking out light between characters in the signs.
