[Class 126] A sunk-type open fireplace is provided with a recess f immediately in front of the refractory base b, in which is a fitting or lining g provided with a lid h which when opened allows the ashes to be raked from the fire into the recess and forms a screen to prevent their passage into the room. In the form shown the lid pivots about its rear edge h<1>, which rests in a groove g<1> on the top rear edge of the lining g, and is supported by quadrantal arms h<2> pivoted to it and sliding in guides i formed on the inside end faces of the lining. The lid when closed lies flush with the hearth, and may be vitreous enamelled to match it. A removable ash-box k may be provided in the recess. In the modification shown in broken lines in Fig. 6, a hollow top l is provided on the lid, air entering the hollow space through apertures l<1> in the ends, being heated in the lid, and passing through the open front of the space to the fire. Curved guide plates may be provided in the space to direct the air to the fire. Alternatively, air ducts may lead from the sides of the hearth or elsewhere into the recess f and thence through passages leading into the hollow lid.
