Abstract
453,535. Printing-machines. ADDRESSOGRAPH CO., and HARTLEY, E. C., 1200, Babbitt Road, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. March 16, 1935, No. 8125. [Class 100 (ii)] Addressing - machirzes ; rotary machines ; tripping - arrangements.-In a machine for printing constant and variable matter on the main part and on one or more stubs of bills, insurance notices, &c., means are provided for feeding a web to cutting-mechanism from which the cut sheets are fed under a platen where they receive impressions from one of a number of elements moved successively into printing position, the platen, the sheet and web feeding mechanisms, and the cutting- mechanism being rendered inoperative when some of the elements are moved into position. The web is fed intermittently from a roll as described in Specification 369,980 and passes directly or through a printing-couple to a cutter 22, Fig. 1, where it is cut into sheets. The sheets fall on to belts 23, driven as in Specification 348,022, and are conveyed under the platen P where they are printed on by the elements D which are fed from a magazine M. The platen is actuated from a constantly-rotating shaft 28 and the mechanism includes a rocker 34, Fig. 4, carrying adjustable detector pins 35 which are adapted to be retained in raised position by tabs T on certain of the elements D. This results in holding a rocker 38 in position to engage a latch 39 on an arm 42 which is thereby held in position to disconnect a pawl 30 carried by a disc 32, secured to the shaft 28 from a stop 29 on a sleeve 28<1> loose on the shaft and arranged to actuate the platen. The arm 42 when latched by the rocker 38 disconnects a clutch 44 controlling the web-feeding mechanism, the web-printing device, the cutter 22, and the belts 23. Stop fingers 26 arrest the bills in different positions under the platen in order to enable impressions from the elements D to be made on the main part and on the stubs. The shaft 28 drives a shaft 58 through reduction gearing, the ratio of which is determined by the number of stubs to be printed, and the shaft 58 carries a cam 60 acting through levers 62, 64 on a pawl 52 arranged to connect together a sleeve 51, and a rod 50. The rod is reciprocated by an eccentric 48 on the shaft 28, and when connected to the sleeve actuates the feeding- mechanism for the elements D. After printing, the sheets pass to a printing-couple C of the type described in Specification 348,025. The sheets pass over a grooved roller and under a roller 105 Fig. 7, which is raised by a face cam 109. If no sheet is present the roller 105 falls and moves a shoulder 102 under a shoulder 101 on a frame 96 carrying the impression cylinder 90. The cylinder 90 and plate cylinder 89 are driven continuously and synchronously from the shaft 56, but are normally held out of contact by a cam 98. Another cam 116 controls the movement of stop fingers III and a clamp roller. Specification 392,612 also is referred to.
