[Class 85] [See also Group XXIV] The cable drum of a rotary deep-boring plant is driven by the planet wheels of a differential gear the sun wheels of which are driven in opposite directions, the speed of at least one sun wheel being continuously variable so that a continuously variable speed of rotation of the cable drum, and preferably also stop. page and reversal thereof, may be obtained. In Fig. 1, a driven conical drum 1 drives a second drum 2 at variable speed through an axially-movable ring 5 of rubber, leather or steel; the drums, through chains drive sun wheels 6, 9, engaging planet gears 12, 13, which, through spider 14, drive shaft 15 reversibly and at variable speeds. The surfaces of the drums 1, 2, may be curved and may merge into cylindrical drums In another form, two co axial electric motors, preferably reversible and one or both with stepless speed regulation, drive intermediate sun wheels engaging planet wheels act ing through bevel gearing to drive a shaft at right angles to the motor shaft In Fig. 4, coaxial impulse wheels 30, 31, are variably driven under control of oppositely moving needle valves 41, 42, controlled by links 43, 44; the wheels drive coaxial sun wheels engaging planet gears from which is driven a shaft coaxial with the wheels. In Fig. 6, open and crossed belts 53, 54 respectively connect drum 52 and pulley 51 on a driven shaft 50 to drum 55 and pulley 56 each secured to sun wheels 57, 58, engaging planet wheels 59 which drive shaft 60 ; the belt 53 is moved as by hydraulic means 61 and fork 64 to vary the speed or reverse the drive. In Fig. 7 a driven conical drum 69 with cylindrical end is connected by crossed belt 72 to a complementary drum 73 fixed to sun wheel 74 while chain gearing 70 drives sun wheel 75. A sleeve carrying the planet gears 77 is connectible by friction clutch 78 to the shaft 80 which is driven at speeds increasing from zero as the belt 72 is moved from the cylindrical to the conical part of drum 69. Alternatively the shaft 80 may be driven directly and oppositely through chain gearing 71 and friction clutch 81. In the plant shown in Fig. 9, pulley 85, through an electro-magnetic clutch and sliding gears 87 ... 90 co-operating with gears 91...94 drives shaft 95 at either of four speeds and shaft 95, through sliding gears 96, 97, and gears 98, 99, drives shaft 100 at any one of eight speeds, shaft 100 driving the drum 105 through gears 101 ... 104. For controlling the feed of the drill, a motor pump 108 drives two impulse wheels 110 arranged as in Fig. 4 and driving a shaft 114 which drives a worm wheel 112 containing a friction clutch permitting slip at a given maximum torque ; the worm wheel 112 is connected through dog clutch 113 to shaft 100 to drive the drum 105. The shaft 114 may also drive catheads 118 through clutches and bevel gearing. The rotary boring machine 122 is driven by a motor 120 and includes a back pressure dynamometer connected through pipe line 123 to a torque-indicating appliance which hydraulically controls the needle valves controlling the impulse wheels 110. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the differential driving gear may also be used to drive the rotary machine, pumps, or other parts of the plant. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
