Abstract
452,719. Propelling boats. BUDIG, F., 36, Sturmvogelstrasse, Johannisthal, Berlin. Feb. 25, 1935, No. 5900. [Class 114] Curved aquafoils pivotally mounted on fore-and-aft axes are moved in a plane transverse to the axis of a boat and by fluid reaction thereon the boat is propelled. Curved blades 1 of stream line section are connected by arms 2 t o fore - and - aft pivots 4, as by bayonet joints for ready detachment, and also with capacity for permitting the blades to swing backward on meeting an obstruction. The curve of the blade is a spiral with its pole at 4. The blades are oscillated up and down by links 13, 14 connected to arms 12 on a vertical shaft 10 which is in turn oscillated by pedals 11 and hand-levers 9. The lower part 17 of each blade may be made of soft rubber which is yieldable under lateral pressure of the water. Instead of manual actuation, engine power may be utilized and transmission may be constituted by mechanical hydraulic or pneumatic apparatus.
