[Class 55 (ii)] In a gas-washing process for the removal of constituents soluble in water, and carried out in a washing column narrowed or tapered upwards, the water, introduced partly at the top and partly at one or more lower points, is regulated in quantity at the different points in order to maintain the gas velocity near to the speed at which the water is carried along by the gas against the force of gravity. The main water supply 4 is at the top, and the secondary water supply 5 is introduced at the part where the column is narrowed; the gas enters at 6 and leaves at 7.
