Abstract

452,422. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. WOODS, C. H., Densworth, Endebess, Kenya, British East Africa. Feb. 15, 1935, No. 4972. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXVI] A gearing arrangement whereby a progressive change of speed may be obtained in both forward and reverse directions comprises a variable speed gear and an epicyclic gear, the first element of the epicyclic gear being rotated by the driven element of the variable speed gear, the driving element of this gear being rotated by the driving shaft and the driven shaft being coupled to the third element of the epicyclic gear. In the form shown in Figs 2 and 4, the variable speed gear comprises a disc 35 slidably but non-rotatably mounted on the driving shaft 13 resiliently held in engagement with friction wheels 25 similarly mounted on radial shafts 24 carried by upstanding parts 22, 23 on a stationary plate 21. The wheels 25 are coupled to the slidable bosses by gimbal rings 27 pivoted to the bosses at 28, 29 and to the wheels by pivots arranged at right angles. to the pivots 28, 29. The wheels 25 are also mounted in forks 32 rotatably mounted in bosses 42 slidable in slots 43 in the plate 21. The lower ends of the members 32 are provided with arms 44 having pins engaging a spiral slot in a plate 46. By rotating the plate the wheels are tilted with respect to their shafts and thereby caused to take up a new radial position giving a different gear ratio. Each of the shafts 24 carries a bevel pinion 39 meshing with a pinion 40 formed integrally with the crown wheel 18 of the epicyclic gear. The other crown wheel 16 is coupled to the driven shaft 19 while the planetary pinions 15 are carried by a spider 14 on the driving shaft. In a modification employing a variable speed gear comprising oppositely coned pulleys connected by a crossed belt, the driving shaft directly rotates one of the crown wheels of the differential gear and orbitally rotates the planetary bevel pinions through the variable speed gear. Fig. 5 shows the invention applied to a governing device for a prime mover. The prime mover directly drives the crown wheel 81 and the friction disc 75. The planet carrier is rotated by a pinion 78 on a shaft 77 carrying a friction wheel 76 adjusted to vary the gear ratio by a centrifugal governor 86 acting through a bellcrank 87 and adjustable link 88. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 17533/97, 15036/00, [both in Class 80], 326,314, [Class 80 (ii)], 375,610, 387,214, 417,633, and 427,431.
