[Class 100 (iii)] Assembling matrices.-Relates to the production of long slugs, which are formed by successively casting a number of sectional slugs of normal length and assembling the sections together end to end. To enable this to be effected in machines in which a longitudinally movable matrix-line holder containing all the sections cannot be accommodated, the complete line of matrices is composed in an assembling- frame, and the sections of the line are transferred therefrom in sequence to a hand composing-stick by which they are supported in casting relation to the mould. The assembling- frame a, Fig. 1, is similar in form to known hand composing-sticks, and has a scale c graduated in ems. The first section of the line to be cast is transferred to a hand-stick e, Fig. 2, and, if not of the exact length of the mould slot, must be slightly longer, so that the slug is cast with an overhanging portion o, Fig. 2a. The second section is cast with a blank matrix at the leading end of a thickness equal to the overhang, if any, of the first, section, so that the slug will be formed with a blank portion, to accommodate the overhang. The succeeding sections are cast in the same way.
