Abstract

[Class 40 (iii)] The scene 1, Fig. 1, is scanned to generate picture signals in a cell 3 while a cell 6 views a portion 7 of the scene, the signal from the cell 6 being used to control the gain of the picture signal amplifier 9, so that as the general illumination of the scene varies, as the result of variation in the illuminating source, the gain of the amplifier 9 is inversely varied. A further cell 5 may view the scene as a whole to provide a signal proportional to the total light reflected. This signal is used to control the picture signal amplifier 9 so as to maintain the general brightness of the receiver picture irrespective of the picture content. Alternatively, this latter signal may be derived from the output of cell 3. The signals from cells 5, 6 may be applied to a potentiometer 11, 12, Fig. 2, the tappings from which conduct the net correcting signal to the amplifier 9.
