Abstract

The process described in the parent Specification for preparing refractory materials which comprises heat treating chrome ore to effect a redistribution of the gangue component and thereafter the chemical correction of the ore with dead burnt magnesium oxide or periclase is modified in that the step of chemically correcting the ore is omitted, and the heat-treated ore is cooled and ground. A refractory body is formed from the ground ore without the addition at any stage of a corrective material. It is stated that the heat treatment destroys the original bonding property of the gangue component and converts it into a material having glass-like characteristics. The heat treatment is preferably conducted in a rotary kiln, and is preferably at or above 3100 DEG F. If a tough refractory is desired the chrome ore is cooled slowly after the heat treatment. An organic binder is added to the cooled and ground product to enable the material to be moulded. Suitable binders mentioned are prepared starch, goulac or sulphite pitch. The crude chrome ore which is used for the present invention includes both the raw ore as mined or a material which has been milled or concentrated.
