Abstract

In the manufacture of silica bricks, finely ground crystals of tridymite and/or crysoobalite are mixed with the raw materials, e.g. quartz or quartzite, to control the inversion of the quartz material into tridymite or crystobalite during the firing. The crystals may be obtained by crushing used silica bricks, from the gray or black belts, which have been standing in the crown of the open hearth furnace during a whole round of steel production.
