Abstract

[Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] In devices with the current to an anode controlled by trans verse deflection of the electron stream as ir the parent Specification, the cathode rays are made parallel without an intersection, before they reach a diaphragm aperture which is electron-op tically reproduced ir the plane of the anode A slit 5<1> in a dia phragm 5 is reproduced in the plane of the anodes 10, 11 by the field 21 between boxshaped electrodes 8, 9, placed beyond the deflecting plates 6, 7. Rays from the cathode 1 are made parallel before reaching the slit 5<1> by a preliminary concentrating system of two box-shaped electrodes 2, 4 and a diaphragm 3. The electrodes are biassed as shown, and the electrodes 2, 4 are at low potential, preferably connected to the cathode 1. The anodes 10, 11 as well as the electrode 8, may be earthed if the electrode 9 is long to screen the anodes from the field 21, or if a net 9<a>, preferably of coarse mesh and connected to the electrode 9 is placed in front of the anodes. The control potentials 14 are applied to one deflecting plate 6 and a reversed-phase output is obtained from the resistance 19 in the circuit of the anode 10. Increased amplification may be produced by coupling the anode 10 to the other deflecting-plate 7 through a condenser 18 and potentiometer 15 as shown. The degree of back coupling may be so great that the ray has only two stable positions and is thrown from one to the other when the potential 14 exceeds a certain value, a relay dependent on a threshold value being thus obtained. The ray is statically screened by the electrodes. Dimensions and voltages are specified. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also anodes with bent outer edges and the circuits described in Specification 451,021. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
