Abstract

450,600. Spare - wheel holders. SMITH, S., Dingley Dell Farm, Windlesham Road, Chobham, Surrey. Dec. 21, 1934, No. 36619. [Class 136 (i)] [See also Group XXXII] A resilient bumper extends across and is secured to a spare-wheel carrier mounted adjacent the base of a vehicle body, the bumper being supported by longitudinally-extending arms pivotally mounted on the body by resilient means. As shown the spare-wheel 11 fits closely in a tray 8 normally engaging a recess 9 beneath the vehicle body 10, the tray having side portions 13 spaced therefrom to surround longitudinally-extending lower side portions 14 of the vehicle body and being pivoted to these portions 14 towards its inner end by means of resilient ball-joints 15. At its outer end the tray is normally supported, so as to be flush with the vehicle body, by straps 26, Fig. 6, pivotally secured one at each side of the tray to the respective hollow side portion 13 and adapted to be connected to the vehicle body by a detachable resilient ball-and-cup joint 28, 29, 30. A bumper 19 such as described in Specification 449,396, [Group XXXII], or a bumper formed from one or more strips of spring steel is mounted on a rigid base 36 secured to the rear end of the tray, the sparewheel tyre being in contact with this end to act as an additional buffer. The opening movement of the tray is limited by straps. One or more auxiliary petrol tanks 35 may be carried in one or each rear corner of the tray.
