[Class 12 (i)] In a radial plain bearing comprising an inner ring having an inner flange mounted on the shaft and connected by a web with an outer flange working in an outer ring and comprising channels to convey lubricant to the working surfaces, the parts constituting the bearing assembly are so formed as to provide communication between the unloaded zone of the bearing clearance space and the atmosphere. The inner ring 1, Figs. 2 and 2a has an inner flange 2 connected by a web 6 with an outer flange 4 having a spherical surface 5 co-operating with a similar surface on the outer ring 7. Channels 9 through the flange 4 convey lubricant to the surfaces 5 ; by providing for a certain degree of radial play in the bearing, any air which may enter the channels can escape between the cooperating bearing surfaces at the unloaded zone. End thrust is taken by plane surfaces 10 on the flange 4 co-operating with side rings 11, lubricant being conveyed to the thrust surfaces by channels 12 ; at each side of the mouth of a channel 12 the side surface of the flange is chamfered so as to provide wedge pockets. The discs 11 are provided with circumferential chamfers 13 communicating with grooves 14 whereby the mouths of the channels 12 are constantly opened to atmosphere. Oil enters through holes 15 in the side rings from an enclosing oil bath and after centrifugal circulation finally escapes through the grooves 14. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 4a for lubrication by grease, end caps 17 are provided to prevent escape of lubricant. Channels 9 convey lubricant to the radial bearing surfaces, and grooves 18 to the thrust surfaces. Inclined channels 19 convey lubricant to the radial and thrust surfaces, the mouths of channels 18, 19 being chamfered. To facilitate assembly, the outer ring has cut-away portions 22 and these extend inwardly beyond the side edges of the flange, whereby the clearance space is put into communication with the atmosphere.
