Abstract
449,174. Washing vegetables. COLE, C., 49, High Street, Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. Dec. 21, 1934, No. 36648. [Class 28 (ii)] A machine for washing celery and other vegetables consists of a rotatable wheel structure 1 having at its periphery a series of cages 16 for receiving the vegetables, means for rotating the cages, and a plurality of water jets 23, 25 for washing the vegetables as they are conveyed past in the cages 16. As shown, the cages 16 are carried by rods 15 radially disposed in 'wheel 1 and provided each with a small roller 17 which contacts with a pad, e.g. of rubber, resiliently mounted on a fixed bracket 21 so as to impart a rotary movement to the cages when under the spray pipes 23, 24. The machine is enclosed in a casing 3 having openings 28, 29 through which one operator can insert the vegetables in and another withdraw them from the cages 16. The lower part 30 of casing 3 forms a tank in which the wash water collects and can be drawn off through outlet 31 and, after straining, re-used. The machine may be mounted on a platform together with a pump for circulating the wash water and a petrol engine or other power unit which drives the machine and pump through belts and pulleys. The platform is provided with detachable wheels for transportation and can be lowered therefrom to the ground for use.
