[Class 110 (ii)] In a rotary engine or pump of the rotaryabutment type, the root of a blade T on the rotor R, and the shape of the recess P in the abutment Q, are such that the front and rear edges of the recess successively engage and disengage with the leading and trailing faces of the root of the blade as the latter moves through the recess. No compression of trapped fluid occurs as contact is made only on one face of the blade root, the other side of the root allowing free access of fluid to the recess. The curves AB, CD, may be.obtained by rolling the rotors together and tracing the paths of points A and C, or can be calculated from the following equations : where a is the radius of the abutment member, n =the multiple of this radius to give the radius of the rotor, 2#‹ is the angle subtended by the arc of the sealing member occupied by the recess.
