Abstract

[Class 118 (ii)] [See also Group XL] A field glass is combined with a sound locator and is provided with a visual indicator for indicating the intensity of the sound received so that the field glass can be easily directed towards the source of the waves. As shown in Fig. 1, a single sound receiver 10 is mounted on a telescope 4 which is provided with a pair of discharge tubes arranged so that the discharge varies with the intensity of sound received. The instrument is orientated until the discharge in the tubes is a maximum when the object producing the sound should be visible in the telescope. The embodiment shown in Fig. 2 comprises a pair of field glasses 12 and a pair of sound receivers 17, 18, the sound receivers controlling respectively discharge tubes 23, 24 mounted together in one of the field glasses and provided with a, common scale 26. When the instrument is pointing towards the distant object, the discharges in the two tubes are of the same length. Head phones may also be connected to the sound receivers if desired. Instead of sound waves, the instrument may be adapted to receive light or wireless waves.
