Abstract

448,163. Electrolytic condensers. DUBIHER CONDENSER CO. (1925), Ltd., Victoria Road, North Acton, London. Aug. 15, 1935, No. 22958. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1934. [Class 37] The plates of flim-forming metals used in electrolytic devices such as electrolytic condensers are etched or roughened by treating them with an acid solution, preferably at the boiling point, and then immersing them in a boiling alcohol, such as glycerine. In an example, aluminium foil is treated with a hot solution of hydrochloric, nitric and sulphuric acids, preferably containing some dissolved aluminium, and is then washed with water and immersed in boiling glycerine. The treatment with the acid solution is carried out until minute pin holes are formed in the foil, these being visible when there is a strong light at the back of the foil. The film is then formed by using an electrolyte consisting of a solution containing boric or equivalent weak acid, ammonia or an alkali or alkali salt and a polyhydroxylic alcohol, such as ethylene glycol, the solution being preferably heated to the boiling point during the forming treatment. The treated foil may then be wound into a roll with a similar foil or with an untreated foil, with a layer of fibrous material disposed between the foils and impregnated with electrolyte. Specification 439,530 is referred to.
