[Class 21] The bung-hole bust c, Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 6, of a barrel, cask, tub, &c. made from staves is carried on a metal plate a lying on the outer or inner face of the bung stave and having two flanges d to embrace the edges of the stave. These flanges are recessed into the stave edge and are tapered to conform to the taper of the stave. The plates are held by screws or rivets. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the flanges d are continued by a plate b recessed into the face of the stave, the metal structure being in one integral piece and the stave being in two parts fitting endwise into this structure and joined by a metal filler or by a tongue and groove. The edges of the flange may have the configuration shown in Fig. 3 at d<1> or d<2>. In Figs. 4 and 6, the stave is in one piece and an auxiliary metal plate may be secured to the side of the stave opposite the plate a, e.g., by screws engaging in the bush and flanges. The edges of the flange may have the configuration shown at the upper or lower part of Fig. 6. The inner plate may be of copper and the outer plate of gun metal, malleable iron, &c.
