TO THE HYDBAULIC PRESSED 8'1 CORPORATION OF 00.
BUNG ron Bananas;
Application filed November 29, 1919. Serial No. 841,877. a
To all wlmmtz'tvnag concern:
Be it known that I, OWEN THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, "have invented a certain new and usefullmprovement in Bungs for Barrels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to sheet metal barrels and more particularly to a hung for such barrels and also to the method of securing said bun One object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of bung which can be connected to the barrel by brazing, and another object of the invention is to provide a bung which can be arranged in connection with a chime thereby permitting the bun to be placed at the end of the arrel, and further permitting two bungs to be employed, one at either end and usable as either I, a filling or venting bung.
With these, and certain other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, and the invention consists also in certain steps hereinafter set forth, and then pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a sheet metal barrel provided with bungs constructed in accordance with my invention and connected thereto by my improved method Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the filling bung and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the venting bun In carrying out my invention sheet metal barrel A preferably composed of 2 similar sections united at their meeting edges and each end of the barrel is provided with a sheet metal chime B, constructed and connected to the barrel in the manner described and claimed in my application filed November 29, 1919, Serial-No. 341,378.
The filling bung com rises a ring portion 0 and a plug portion The ring portion C is inserted in a circular opening produced in the side of the barrel near the end thereof and the edges of said circular opening are turned inwardly as shown at A and the inner end of the ring C is spun or peened over this inwardly projecting edge as shown at G.
The opening which receives the ring employ a member (1 is placed very close to the end of the barrel and the inner edge B of the chime ring will contact with the ring member as most clearly shown in Fig. 2 and in connection with the chime ring I employ a spacing plate B which abut against the chime ring. The outer end of the ring member C of the bung is flanged, as shown at to overlap the edge of the chime ring and the spacing plate B Between the chime ring and the inturned ed e A and also between the spacing plate 2 and the inturned edge, I interpose a definite quantity of brazing material E which may be in the form of a wire or of a brazing paste molded into ring form. 7
After the parts have been assembled as thus far described they are subjected to the g proper degree of heat which will cause the this plug member is formed with a central boss D having a threaded recess D into which can be screwed a spigot (not shown) which is ordinarily connected to the bun and carried upon the interior of the barrel during transportation.
The plug member of the bung is also provided with a wrench socket D and into which a wrench is fitted in order to screw the plug into or out of the ring member of the bung.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the vent bung which so far as structural features are concerned is identically the same as the filling bung but is preferably made smaller in size. This vent bung comprises the ring member F and the plug member G which as before stated are of the same general character as the ring and plug C and D and they are united by brazing and also cooperate withthe inturned edges of the barrel, chime ring, and spacing plate. The plug member of the filling plug, however, is only provided with a socket recess G and is not constructed with a spigot receiving recess.
In practice I prefer to place the filling bung near one end of the barrel and the filling and emptying bung at the other end of the barrel and upon the side opposite thereof. This enables the barrel to be ar ranged in a horizontal position and by opening the venting bung the entire contents of the barrel can be drained therefrom, and in filling the operations can be reversed. The relative positions of the filling and venting bungs materiallyaid in the quick and eas filling and empty ng ot the barrel, and tie wastage which ordinarily occurs in the filling and emptying operations with the barrel now in common use, is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a sheet metal barrel having an opening, of a bung ring inserted in said opening having an exterior flange, a chime ring arranged upon said barrel and engaging a portion of said bung, and a brazing ring arranged between the barrel and hung and uniting said parts.
2. The combination with a barrel having an opening, of a chime ring arranged upon said barrel, a bung ring inserted in said barrel opening, a portion of said bung ring engaging the chime ring, brazing material surrounding the bung ring and brazing material carried by the chime. ring and uniting said parts.
3. The combination with a bung ring having an exterior flange, of a barrel having an opening, the edges of which are pressed inwardly, said bung ring being inserted in said opening and having its inner end turned over said edges, a chime ring with which said bung ring contacts, and brazing material surroundingsaid bung ring and uniting said parts. a
4. The herein described method which consists in providing an opening in a barrel, arranging a chime rin upon said barrel adjacent said opening, inserting a hung ring in said opening and bringingthe inner edges into contact with the barrel, and bringing the outer end of said bung ring into engagement with the chime ring, arranging brazing materlal about the bung ring and between the chime ring and barrel, and subjecting said parts to heat whereby they become brazed together.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
OWEN THOMAS.
