Another object of the invention is to provide in a container an improved bung and mounting ltherefor in which the interlocking elements are disposed intermediate the bung flange at one end and a riveted portion at 2Q the otherend, the latter serving to reinforce the interlocking wall portion of the container.
Another object of the invention is to construct in a container an improved bung and mounting therefor in which interlocking elements are disposed between the side walls of both the flange and body portion of the bung and the adjacent or opposed walls of the container.

My invention is applied to a sheet metal wall of a container. The Container shown comprises a sheet metal body portion 1 and a sheet metal head 2, suitably connected as by a double seam 3. y
The bung, which is indicated as an entirety at. 4, is preferably mounted in the head 2, and is threaded interiorly to receive a closing plug (not shown). The head 2 is formed with an opening and then the walls surrounding the opening are distended in one direction to form below the container walll (a) a pocket or annular chamber Shaving depending side Walls 5a and a bottom wall 5b and (b) a neck 6 depending from the inner circumferential edge of the bottom 5b.
The walls of the neck are formed of flat integrally connected sections 6a disposed at v angles one to another, there preferably being eight flat sections.
The bung 4 comprises a body portion 4a terminating at its lower end in a relatively thin wall 7 which is riveted over the free or lower edge of the neck 6, as shown in Fig. 2, and a flange 4b at its upper end` which flange fits into the pocket or chamber 5, being held therein by the riveted over wall 7. As shown, the riveted over wall 'l' and flange 4b co-operate to hold the body portion in the neck and against endwise movement therein. The exterior' wall of the body portion 4a between the wall 7 and flange 4b is provided with flat sides 8 (see Fig. 5) corresponding in size and number to those provided in the neck 6, so that the body portion snugly or tightly fits into the latter, the angularly arranged opposed sides serving as an interlock between the bung and neck to prevent the vent turning of the bung and that the flange 4b and wall 7 serve to maintain the bung in its seat or against endwise movement.
In Figs. 7, 8 and 9, I have shown a slightly different embodiment of the invention in which the flat sides of the bung body and flat sides of neck are inclined or tapered as shown at 8, 6a', respectively, which form of construction facilitates the making of the bung and shaping of the neck, as well as the assembly of the bung in position in the latter.
It will also be noted that the riveted `over wall 7 also interlocks with the interior and exterior faces of the angular sides 6a, 6a', at or adjacent their lower free ends and cooperates with such ends to supplement the interlocking between such sides and the opposed sides of the bung.
In Figs. 10 and 11 I show a further embodiment of the invention in which the side wall of the lchamber 5, instead of being circular,
is of polygonal shape having contiguous fiat sides 5 and the iiange of the bung is similarly shaped to provide fiat sides 46X which interlock with the sides In this latter form of construction, it will be noted that all side portions of the bung from end to end thereof are interlocked with the container wall and in addition thereto the depending wall 7 at the lower end of thev bung being riveted over the flat sides 6ax of the neck results in providing a supplemental interlock with the depending neck.
To those skilled in the art to which my invention relates many changes in construction and widely differing embodiments and -applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departing from the spirit'and scope ofthe invention. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative and are not intended to be in any sensel limiting.
What I claim is:
1. A container having a sheet metal wall formed with an opening, the wall surrounding said opening being distended to form a chamber having side and bottom walls and HENRY M. DILLHOEFER, JR.
