Description

' Julv'le 2, 1931. H, WARD 1,808,483
METALLIC RECEPTAGLE Filed June 18, 192s Patented June 2, 1931 lafrlizra'r oFFlcE HUGH H. WARD, OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA METALLIC RECEPTACLE Application filed June 18,
My invention provides improved means for securing a driven bung in the bunghole of a sheet metal receptacle without interfering with the complete drainage of the receptacle, which may be reinforced adjacent to the bung-hole and thereby enabled to better withstand the shocks and strains incident to the driving and extraction of bnngs.
My improvements are especially applicable tol Cask-like receptacles formed of sheet metal bent to form a curved body having heads permanently set in the ends thereof. In accordance with my invention, the bung-hole is preferably formed in the body but may be formed in a head and the sheet metal surrounding the bung-hole is bent or crimped into an annular outwardly projecting ridge terminating in an inturned flange and forming a reenforcing rib and aresilient bung-engaging lip. A reen-forcing plate fixed to the inner wall of the body adjacent to the bung-hole is provided with an outwardly turned flange or collar housed between the ridge members and yieldingly reenforcing the bung engaging lip, which is preferably fluted circumferentially to form a shallow channel or groove.
The characteristic features and advantages of my improvements will further appear from the following description and the Vaccompanying drawings in illustration of a preferred embediment of my invention.
In the drawings, Fig. l is an elevation of a cask or barrel embodying my improve-v ments; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken through the bung-hole; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view looking toward the bottom of the bung.
As illustrated in the drawings, my invention is applied to a barrel formed by rolling sheet metal into a cylindrical body 1 reen- 1928.l Serial No. 286,150.
inturned resilient lip 6 'spaced from the member 5 and bent t0 form a circumferential groove. A reenforcing plate 7 conforming to the contour of the body 1 is welded or riveted thereto around the bung-hole and has an outwardly turned edge 8 formingv an annular flange housed between the members 5 and 6 and engaging the apex or ridge of the latter on the face thereof opposite the circumferential groove.
A wooden bung 9 may be driven into the bung-hole without danger of distortion of the barrel and is firmly held against dislodgment by engagement of the protruding edge of the lip 6, the lip being yieldinglyl reenforced by the collar 8.
Since the members 5, (Sand-8 project outwardly from the inner surface of the'Wall 1, the receptacle may be completely drained when ,the bung is removed without obstruction from such members.
Having'described my invention, I claim:
A cask-likereceptacle having a bung-hole in a curved wall thereof and surrounded by an annular ridge bent outwardly fromsaid wall and having an inturned grooved lip for the engagement of a driven bung and a reenforcing plate conforming to the contour of and fixed to Ythe kinner surface of said wall and having thereon an outwardly turned collar housed between the members ofr said ridge and reenforcing said lip.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my name this 21st day of May, 1928.l Y
HUGH H. WARD.`
