Be it known that l, Gunners Herinner Dna- PER, a citizen of the United States of Allier ica, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State oli Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Slieet-liletal Containers, of which the following is a specication. A
My invention relates to improvements in metal containers, and more particularly to sheetsmetal barrels with removable closures. The `object of my invention is to provide a metal container which shall be cheap to manufacture, readily opened and closed, unobstructed at the mouth, and exceedingly simple in its closure members. The device oi' my invention, shown in several modified li'orins, in the accompanying drawings, admirably meets these and other practical requirements, and permits of continued use of a metal receptacle, especially adapted for heavier liquids and solids, over long conv tinued periods, while permitting thorough cleansing of the interior oi' tliereceptacle at any time it is empty for refilling.
Thesheetmetal barrel herein set forth, as an embodiment of my invention, is coinprised of a cylindrical body-portion, preierably ribbed midway to provide a bilge, and suitably formed at its mouth or opening to accommodate the closure members. These closure members preferably comprise a dished circular head, insertible within the mouth or' the barrel, and a split resilient j ring adapted to engage respectively, an

The body, a, of the container, may be made of any suitable or desired form, but preferably it is cylindrical and centrally rolled to provide two enlarged convex ribs, b, E5, which serve as the bilge or roll-ing support for the barrel. The mouth of the container is very simply shaped, to atord a terminal retaining flange, and an inner annular rib or seat, for accommodating the closure part. As the retaining member may be cheaply and readily manufactured from round rod, l preferably roll the mouth of the barrel .to approximately' a halffround, as shown in the several figures of the drawings. Being thus shaped to inclose approximately one-hall the periphery of the retaining member, the closure parte is so shaped and disposed as to be engaged by said member peripherally in position beyond its diameter in cross section.l Referring still to Figs. -Il and 2, the terminal flange c, is formed closely adjacent to an annular seat or rib d, whereon the closure part c, is adapted to bear. This closure part is dished, a' -ll has a spun inwardly protruding rim j", `appronilnately of the saine curvature, as that of the terminal flange c. When theclosure is inserted within the mouth of the receptacle, the split ring' g is adapted to be forced to, its retaining position against the inherent spring of the metal forming the barrel body and the closure, and will readily find its seat beneath the flange c, in the halt'- round recess, provided therefor, with its ends sprung almost into engagement. The parts if accidentally misshapen, may readily be seated by rapping upon the half-round with a mallet, and thus the closure part is held securely in place, until the split ring is removed.
l In the construction of Fig. 3, the closure part c, is slightly modified. to provide a depending rim c', which conforms a} proximately to the modified seat or inner rib, d', while a gasket L, is interposed to afford a more perfect seal, than is afforded by metal to inetal, under moderate pressures.
