To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY C. COGHRANE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Barrels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to metallic receptacles of the barrel type, and has for its object to provide a receptacle of this kind in which willbe combined great durability and simplicity of construction. One important object is to insure against leakage resulting from transportation of the barrels during which they are necessarily brought into contact with one another and are roughly handled generally.
Another object is to prevent the displacement of any ,part of the interlocking connections between the body of the barrel and its head during such treatment. Further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an elevation of a receptacle or barrel constructed substantially in accordance with this invention, the upper portion being shown in section, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through one of the joints or connections between the body and head.
The walls A of the body of the receptacle or barrel are preferably made of a single piece of sheet metal bent to conform to the usual barrel shape and having its upper and lower edge portions bent into the form of partially closed beads B, there being a circumferential depression or groove C in the outer surface of the walls A where each of the beads B merge into the body portion proper. The bead B is formed by first bending the metal outward from said groove C and then bending said metal inward and downward, so that the open portion of the bead faces toward the interior of the barrel.
Each head D of the receptacle may be made in the same manner of a sheet metal disk having its central portion depressed as at d and its peripheral edge curled to form a partially closed bead E, said bead being formed by bending said edge portion upwardly, inwardly and downwardly to conform to the interior of the bead B. The opening in the bead E is presented to the horizontal flat 'portion of the head directly adjacent said bead. A rod F may be used as a filler within the bead E in order to increase the solidity of the connection between the head and body.
To further strengthen and reinforce this connection, a band or strip G, which may be of sheet metal the same thickness as that used for the body and head of the receptacle, is bent around the bead B with one edge arranged in the depression or groove 0 and its other edge arranged substantially on the same level with the inner edges of the beads E and B, see Fig. 2. These inner edges of thebeads E and B and of the band G are beveled, as at e, b and 9, all of said bevels facing'inwardly toward the center of the joint or connection between the body and head. All of these edges are also spaced away from the outer surface of the head, so that a jagged space is left between said outer surface of the head and the beveled inner edges of said beads and band into which space a filling of brass or other suitable material H is poured and allowed to harden for sealing the joint.
This brazing material is also extended a short distance beyond the beveled edge 9 and is built up to a desired extent along said edge, as at h, in order to form a shoulder or abutment for the same which tends to prevent said edge from being jarred away from the bead B and the joint bein opened in that way. It will be note that owing to the jagged formation of the space filled by the brazing material, there is a similar shoulder or abutment formed behind the beveled edges 1) and a, each of said edges being thus held separately against any tendency to spring out and open the joint. A filling of brazing or soldering material K may also be placed in the groove 0 at the edge of the band G which terminates in sald groove, thus securing that edge in proper position. I
In constructing the barrel or receptacle, the heads D may be first formed with the beads E inclosing the rods F, and thebeads B, which may have been previously par: tially formed, then closed or completely formed around the bead E, after which the band G is put in place and the brazing or soldering material allowed to flow and harden in the spaces as hereinbefore described.

posing the contents of the receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
1. In a receptacle of the character described, the combination with a body portion having an open bead at its end, the opening of said bead facing inwardly, of a head having a bead formed around its peripheral edge and arranged on its outer face to conform to and fit within the bead on the body portion, the edges of said beads being spaced slightly from the outer surface of the head, a filling of soldering material arranged in the space between said edges of the beads and said outer surface of the head and in which said edges are embedded, said soldering material being thus arranged in the depression of the head formed by the outwardly projecting bead thereon, and a separate band bent into the form of a bead inclosing the bead on the body portion and having one edge embedded in said soldering material in the depression of the head.
2. In a receptacle of the character described, the combination with a body portion having an open bead at its end and an external groove at the juncture of said bead with the body portion, the opening of the bead facing inwardly, of a head having a bead formed around its peripheral edge and arranged on its outer face to conform to and fit within the bead on the body portion, the edges of said beads being spaced slightly from the outer surface of the head, a filling of soldering material arranged in the space between said edges of the beads and said outer surface of the head and in which said edges are embedded, said soldering material being thus arranged in the depression of the head formed by the outwardly projecting bead thereon, a separate band bent into the form of a bead inclosing the bead on the body portion and having one edge embedded in said soldering material in the depression of the head, the other edge of said band being arranged in the external groove at the juncture of the body portion and its bead, and another filling of soldering material arranged in said external groove at the edge of the band therein.
3. In a receptacle of the character described, the combination with a body portion having an open bead at its end, the opening of said bead facing inwadly, of a head having a bead formed around its peripheral edge and arranged on its outer face to conform to and fit within the bead on the body portion,'the edges of said beads being spaced slightly from the outer surface of the head, and a filling of soldering material arranged in the space between said edges of the beads and said outer surface of the head and in which said edges are embedded, said soldering material being thus arranged in the depression of the head formed by the outwardly projecting bead thereon and the edges of said body and head beads, which are embedded in the soldering material, being beveled and facing inwardly. toward the center of the joint for the purpose specified.
