The? invention relates to new and useful improvements in jars and closures therefor.
An object'of the invention is to provide a jar which is so constructed that metal closure may be secured thereto by forming an inwardly projecting head in the depending flange of the closure, which inwardly proj ecti ng bead cooperates with the j ar structure to draw the closure into tight sealing contact with the ar.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jar and closure therefor of the above type, wherein said jar is provided 7 with spaced ribs in the region of the de pending flange, which ribs provide a lateral support for the flange to facilitate the formation of a holding bead in the flange which is projected between "said ribs.

The invention is directed to the combination of a jar structure and a closurestruc- .ture which greatly facilitates the bending of the metal closure so as to draw the same into tight sealing contact with the ar. The closure is provided with a depending flange which is preferably beaded at its lower edge to strengthen the same. This closure, as
illustrated, consists of a band with a locking tongue for joining the ends thereof, and associated with the band is a cap having a channel for a sealing material which is directly over the upper edge of vthe jar. The
jar is preferably of glass, porcelain or the like, and is provided on the outer wall thereof with spaced ribs in the region of the de pending flange. The upper rib is preferably at the top edge ofthe outer wall of the jar. The lower rib is preferably at thelower edge of the depending flange when the closure is aoplied to the jar. le lower rib is of substantially the inner diameter of the depending flange so that the lower edge portion of the flange of the closure may rest on the outer face of. this rib. In order to secure the closure to the jar, an inwardly proj ecting head is formed in the flange by a suit able contracting tool, and this bead conforms to the shaping of the body of the jar between said ribs. As thebead is forced beneath the upper rib and into the space or recess between the ribs, it will draw the metal closure into tight sealing contact with the jar.
Referring more in detai to the drawing,
the jar forming a part of the invention is indicated at 1. Said jar has the upper edge 2 thereof curved to form a sealing seat. This curved upper edge extends, as shown, to the outer edge of a rib 3. The wall of the jar directly beneath the rib 3 is curved inwardly as indicated at l." Spaced from this rib 3 is a projecting rib5 which is formed integral with the jar. The closure for the jar includes a cap 8' which is provided with a channel in which is placed a sealing gasket 9. This gasket and channel are directly over the upper edge of the jar, and the sealing gasket is pressed into tight sealing contact with the lip or upper edge 2 of the jar. The cap 8 is held on the jar, in the present embodiment of the invention, by a band 10., The band 10 has its ends joined by a locking lug 11 carried by one end of the band which projects through a slot in the tongue 12 carried by the other end of the band. By lifting the tongue, the connection between the ends of the band may be broken and the band removed from the jar. The band 10 has a portion 13 which overlies the cap 8 and a depending portion which will be referred to as the flange of the closure. At the lower edge of this flange there is a strengthening bead l i. This is formed by bending the metal outward and inwardly adjacent the lower eoge, thus leaving the edge of the metal facing toward the The outer diameter of the rib 5 is approximately the same as the inner diameter of the extreme lower edge of the depending flange of the closure. The outer diamete' of this rib 5 is also slightly greater than the outer diameter of the rib 3, although from certain aspects of the invention, the ribs may be made of substantially the same diameter. It is desirable that the lower ib at least shall e approximately of the same outer diameter as the inner diameter of the lower edge of the depending flange.

The closure is pressed firmly into contact with the jar and it then subjected to a spinning tool or other suit ble device for forming an inwardly proje ng bead 15 in the de lendin flange. As the metal is forced inwardly by a. contracting tool, the lower edge of the depending flange contacts with the rib 5, and said rib becomes a lateral support for the depending flange, holding said lower edge substantially in its original position. In other words, this rib prevents the contracting of the lower edge portions of the flange, and insures the forming of a bead rather than a bending of the flange. he contracting action forming the bead causes the flange to contact with the rib 3 and to be bent into the recess 7, substantially conforming thereto. The contracting of the metal to form this bead with the lower edge of the flange supported, will draw down on the closure so as to bring the sealing gasket into tight sealing contact with the jar. The springing action of the metal is constantly drawing the closure into this tight engagement.
Vhile I have shown and described in de tail a closure which includes a band having the ends thereof joined so that they may be readily separated, it will be understood that from certain aspects of tne invention, the closure may be of an entirely different construction. The essential feature, however, resides in the depending flange which can be formed with a holding bead projected between holding ribs or projecting parts on the jar.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in th appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what jar as shown I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a jar and a metal closure therefor comprising a cap and a holding band, said cap having a channel near its peripheral edge adapted to receive a sealing gasket, said band having a portion thereof overlying said cap and said sealing gasket, and a flange depending therefrom having a strengthening head at the lower edge thereof,said jar having formed therein spaced ribs at the upper outer face thereof, said flange being so proportioned that the strengthening head at the lower edge thereof will contact with the lower side of the lowermost rib, whereby when lateral pressure is applied to the flange to bead a portion thereof into the space between the ribs he contraction of the metal will cause the overlying portion of the band to draw down on the cap and bring the cap, sealing gasket and jar into tight sealing relation.
