(ci. 11s-121)v The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in a method of closing metal containers and more particularly to a method of closing metal containers of the type wherein the cover is secured to the container body by a sealgasket is disposed between the` cover and the body portion.
An object of the invention is to provide a method of closing a container ofthe sealing ring type wherein the pressure applied to the sealing ring for deformihg the same and sealing the container may be utilized tor firmly pressing the cover into sealing contact with the gasket and for firmly pressing the gasket into sealing contact with the container'body simultaneously with the deformation of the sealing ring.
The above and other objects of the invention after more fully disclosed.

'Ihe half bead Il terminates adJacent but slightly above the holding shoulder i. This bead at the lower end of the cover flange serves to place the sharp edge thereof adjacent the body whereby to prevent any danger of cutting sealing material. It also forms a substantial support for the lower portion ofthe sealing ring to bear against when it is pressed into locking position and thus maintains the wall of the sealing ring substantially parallel with the upper section of the body wall.
The cover is secured to the container body by sealing ring ilwhlch has overlapping ends. one of which is indicated at il. The upper portion of thesealingringisbentinwardlyasatlland overlies the curved portions I and l of the cover. This bent portion inwardly and downwardly-about a shorter radius than the curved portion l of the cover section. The inner edge of this bent portion ll contacts with the curved portion l oi the cover, when applied thereto, at a point well beyond the crown of thejcurved portion. The sealing ring l! is also provided with an inwardly projecting portion l2a at its lower edge which is curved inwardly and upwardly. v j
The above described container forms no part of the present invention, but is shown and described in the copending application of William F. Punte, Serial No.l 613,094, led May 23.11932, of which this application is a division.
In carrying out the invention, the parts are first assembled as shown in Fig. 3. parts thus led, that is, with the upper portion Il of the sealing ringl overlying the cover l and with the lower portion lia of the sealing ring disposed beneath theholding shoulder l, the container is subjected to a closing apparatus in the i'orm of die members. one of which is inidicated at z andthe other at y. These die members :c and y are then moved relatively toward ofthe-sealingringiscurved s With the each other. 'ihe die member r will contact with Il of the sealing ring. This curved portion Il,
which contacts with the cover at a point directly over the inside of thehollow bead 3 on the container body, will be moved inwardly and changed in shape so as to conform more nearly to the curvature of the portion 8 of the cover as shown in Fig. 4. 'I'he lower edge Ila of the sealing ring will be straightened out beneath the holding shoulder l as indicated in Fig. 4. This shortening of the side wall of the sealing ring I2 is accomplished by pressure applied in aV direction parallel with the side wall of the container body. 'I'his pressure is also transmitted against the shoulder l and against the cover, thus tending to move the cover toward the shoulder. This movement will cause the cover to make a very intimate sealing contact with the sealing gasket III, which vin turn will be caused to make a very intimate sealing contact with the hollow bead 3 on the container body. 'Ihe die members x and y include the usual spring means which will only yield when a seal of proper tightness is obtained, and therefore, as the die members move toward each other, the sealing gasket Il will be pressed against the bead 3 and it is only the tightness of the seal which will prevent further movement of the die members relative to each other.
The finally closed container is, as noted above, shown in Fig. 4. The sealing gasket I has been forced into intimate contact with the bead I and into the recess formed between the outer curved portion of the bead and the cmved portion l of the cover. 'I'here is thus formed a tight contact of the sealing gasket with the cover all the way to the inner side of the bead, and there is also formed a tight sealing contact with the bead throughout the upper surface thereof. The metal of the sealing ring is non-elastic, so that, as pressure is applied thereto and the cover is forced into tight sealing contact with the con-'- tainer body, the changing of the shape of the sealing ring will remain in the final shape given thereto by the pressure of the dies. The expansionofthe gasket liisthuslimitedbythe Y the container edge upper and lower portions I4 and Iza respectively of the sealing ring, 4and therefore the cover will beheld in tight sealing contact with the gasket, and the gasket in tight sealing contact with-the bead 3 through this deformation of the sealing ring I2.
It is understood that the cover and sealing ring are applied to the container by the manufacturer, and that the container, after it is filled bythe packer, has' the bottom end 2 double seamed hereto.
While the invention has been described as applied to the clodng of the container shown in detail in the accompanying drawing, that is, one wherein a sealing ring is deformed by pressure to firmly hold the coverin tight sealing engagement with the container body, it will be understood that it may be used in connection with containers of other types.
