METALLIC BANK.
Application lved January 2, 1925.- 'Seria1 No. 21.
This invention relates to metallic containers and banks and to the process for making the same. It has for one object to provide a bank which is made e'ssentlallyl I 5 of a single piece of metal and lwhich is therefore strong and durable. It has Jfor another object to provide a process for making the bank from a single piece of metal whereby it may be economically and rapidly Other objects will appear from time to time throughout the specification and claims. t My invention is illustrated moreI or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawing, wherein: Y v i Figure 1 is a partial plan view of a disc of metal from which the container is made;
Figure 2 is a vertical cross section throughthe container after it has been partially formed;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 after the container has been further shaped;
Figure 4 represents a still further step;
Figure 5 shows the metallic shell of the bank after it hasbeen completely formed and shows also an added ring which is inserted;
Figure 6 is a vertical cross section showing the ring inserted and fastened in place. In this form the complete container or bank ap ears.
l s appears in the drawings of Figure 1 the bank itself is made entirel from a single piece of metal. The form il ustrated herewith it shaped like a barrel. Barrel hoops are rolled into the bank casing and the bank casing proper is complete in the form shown in Figure 5. For the purpose of attaching a lid, however, a ring is set in. The ring is fastened to the bank shell and the lid may then be put in place in engagement with the 'lghe process of forming the bank includes the following steps. A disc of metal is first formed as shown in Figure 1. This is then stamped into a more or less cup-like form. The initial stamping may carry the forming as far as that shown in Figure 2 or it may not carry it so far, and more than one operation may be required to bring the disc into the form shown in Figure 2.
After being formed into a cup as shown in Figure 2, the container is swelled at the sides into the general barrel-like form shown 1n Figure 3. In the next step the barrel hoops are formed *inv the container, preterablyk being rolled into it and takes theform. shown in Figure 4.
In the next step the upper edge lof the barrel is trimmed and turned-outwardly. This is shown in the lowerhalf of'Figure 5. f
By another process which no part of the present invention a ring which is` shown in Figure 5 is formed, and in the final process'the ring is set into-thevbarrel and its downwardly depending ange is turned and rolled outwardly to conformy to the interior of the barrel. This ringis permanently and lirmly engaged in the barrel and forms a top engagement for a final c10- sure. u v
Although Ihave shown an operative device, still it will be obvious that vmany changes might be made in size, shape and arrangement of parts without departing materiall from the spirit of my invention; and I wish, therefore, that my showing be taken as in a sense diagrammatic.
I claim:
1. The process of forming a metallic container from a single piece of metal which includes preparing a metallic sheet, cupping said sheet2 bulging the sides of said cup outward, flaring outwardly the outer open edge `of the cup, pressing within said cup a ring having a downwardly depending ange, and forming said flange to conform to the shape of the interior of said container.
' 2. The process of forming a metallic container from a single piece of metal which includes preparing a metallic sheet, cupping said sheet, bulging the sides of said cup outward, forming outwardly extending ribs about said cup, flaring outwardly the outer open edge of the cup, pressin within said cup a ring having a downwar y depending ange, and forming said flange to conform to the shape of the interior of said container.
3. The process of forming a metallic container from a single flat piece of metal which includes preparing a metallic sheet, cupping said sheet, bulging the sides of said cup outward, haring outwardly the outer open edge of the cup, pressing within said cup a ring having a downwardly depending flange, and forming said flange to conform to the shape of the interior of said container.
4. The process of forming a metallic container from a single piece of metal which formin .said cup a ring having includes predparing -a fiat metallic disc, cupping saidA Isc, bulging the sides of said cup outward, forming outwardly extending ribs about said cup, trimming and flaring outwardly thev upper edge of said cup, ressing withm said cu a ring having a ownwardly depending ange, and spreading and said flange to conform to the shape of the interior of said container. y
5. The process of forming a metallic co'ntainer .from a single piece of metal whlch includes preparin a at metallic dlsc, cupping said disc; buiging the sides of said cup outward, forming outwardly extending ribs about said cup, one of them adjacent the o n top, trimming and flaring outwardly di): upper edge of said cup, pressing within a downwardly dependingl flange, and spreadin and forming said iiange to conform to the s ape of the interior of said container.
6. The process of forming avmetallic con- -tainer from a single. iece of metal which includes reparing a at metallic disc, cupping sai disc, bulging the sides of said cup outward, forming outwardly extending ribsv about said cup, trimmin and Haring outwardly the upper edge o said cup, pressing within said cup a rin depending ange, and pressing and forming having a downwardly said flan cinto thev rib adjacent the upper edge an causing the iiange to conform to the interior of said container.
As a new article of manufacture a metallic container formed of a sin le sheet of metal having outwardly bulge sides and an open top, an annular groove adjacent said open top, in combination with a ring formed with a downwardly depending skirt and an inwardly extending flange, said ring being seated in the open to and the inwardly depending skirt being orced into the groove.
8. As a new article of manufacture a metallic container formed of a single sheet of metal having outwardly bulged sides and an open top, an annular groove adjacent said open top, in combination with a ring formed with a downwardly depending` skirt and an inwardly extending iange, said ring being seated in the open top and the inwardly depending skirt being forced into the groove, said receptacle having an inwardly depressed bottom and outwardly pressed beads at separated points throughout its height.
