G. F. BEHRINGER BUNG FOR METALLIC RECEPTACLES Filed Feb. 18. 1921 Patented June 2,

BUNG FOR METALLIC BECEPTACLES.
Application filed. February 18, 2.921. Serial No. 4%,026.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnovnn F. Ben-smear, citizen of the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State 5 of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs for Metallic Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bungs for metallic receptacles, the present embodiment of the invention being particularly designed and adapted for use 1n connection wlth metallic barrels, drums, and the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a generally improved bun structure of the class mentioned, which wil be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and efficient in use.
A further and very important object is to improve therconstruction, general arrangement and combination of parts whereby a fluid-tight bung structure and plug are provided.
A still further object is the provision of an improved bung structure and .plug or closure therefor in which the point of sealing contact and the arrangement of the parts is such that the maintenance of a fluid-tight 30 closure does not depend upon the maintenance of a fluid-tight joint between the bung ring or sput and the adjacent parts of the receptacle or package. A still further object is the provision of an improved sput adapted to co-operate withand reinforce the annular sealing ring or beading forming a seat for the sealing gasket and plug, said sput or ring being admirably adapted to be formed from sheet metal and being provided with an attaching flange adapted to be secured within the walls of the receptacle in any suitable and convenient manner, preferably by spot Welding.
With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bung structure constructed in accordance with this invention, the threaded 56 plug or closure being removed.
Fig. 2, a central cross sectional view of the same with the plug inserted.
Fig. 3, a top plan view of the plug removed.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts thruout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved bung structure may be incorporated either in the side walls' or end walls or head of the metallic barrel or drum, as common practice.
The wall 1, of the receptacle or vessel, is provided witha suitable opening, the marginal edges. of the opening being provided wth an annular heading 1, forming a sealing portion or seat for the plug gasket 2, (where a gasket is necessary or desirable), said gasket being adapted to be compressed and sealed by means of the flanged or overhanging rim portion 2 of the threaded plug 2.
The bung ring or sput 3, comprises a threaded plug receiving flange 3, adapted to extend inwardly from and to register with the receptacle bung opening, said threaded flange 3, terminating in an annular bun hole reinforcing beading 3", seated beneath the beading l, and conforming therewith. As a means of attaching the ring or sput within the adjacent walls of the vessel surrounding the bung opening, the ring or sput is preferably provided with an attaching flange or body portion 3", adapted to be secured to the wall 1, in any suitable and convenient manner, but preferably by means of spot welds 3, as shown.
It will be seen that the sealing point 1, being between the head or flanged portion of the plug, and the exterior lip or mouth portion of the bung opening of the vessel walls, 95 and the sput being entirely beneath such sealing point, and being also held and clamped against the latter by the action of the plug 2, when the latter is drawn up, any looseness or leakage between the bung flange 100 and the walls of the vessel will not effect the action of the plug in its sealing function.
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, without having attempted to set forth all the forms in which 105 it may be made, or all the modes of its use, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In combination with a receptacle provided with a hung opening and an annular 110 reinforcing plug sealing portion, a threaded sput having an annular flange extending laterally from said bung opening and terminating in an annular portionseated beneath and interlocking with said plug sealing portion, and a threaded plug insaid sput seated on said plug sealing portion and drawing the latter and said sput toward each other in clampin and sealing relation to said annular rein orcing portion of the receptacle surrounding said bung opening when drawn up.
2. In combination with a receptacle provided with a bung opening and an annular surrounding beading formlng a'seat for the plug, a sput formed of sheet metal and comprising a threaded annular flange registering with said bung opening and terminating in an annular beading seated beneath sald plug seat beading and terminating in a laterally extending flange welded within the .walls of said receptacle.
3, A bung structure for metallic receptacles, a receptacle having an opening and provided with an annular plug sealing beading, a bung ring having a beading seated beneath and'interlocking with said plug sealing beading and a laterally extending flange Welded within the surrounding Walls of said receptacle, and a plug threaded in said bung ring seated on said annular plug sealing beading and adapted to clamp the latter against the subjacent beading of said bung ring.
l. A hung for metallic receptacles, comprising a receptacle having an opening and provided with an annular surrounding beading forming a plug sealing seat, a threaded hung ring having a similarly shaped beading beneath said beaded plug sealing seat and provided with an attaching flange surrounding said heading and welded within said receptacle, and a threaded plug theaded in said bung ring and having a flange seated on said annular plug sealing seat, said plug serving when drawn upto clamp the beaded portion of'the receptacle between the flange of said plug and said beaded portion of said bungring.
A bung structure for metallic receptacles, a receptaclehaving an opening and provided with an annular plug sealing beading, a hung ring having a beadingseated beneath and engaging with said plug sealing heading and a laterally extending flange welded within the surrounding walls of said receptacle, and a plug threaded in said bung ring seated on said annular plug sealing heading, and adapted to clamp the latter against the subjacent beading of said bung ring.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
