$89,273. Divided and this application Decem-A 2 claims. (c1. 22o- 3) The present invention relates to an improvement in high pressure gas containers, commonly known as liqueiier tanks adapted to receive phase changing material, such as solid carbon dioxide.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of improvements in the'strengthening and sealing features of the liqueer tank structure, including the use of a `strengthening ring at the top of vthe tank, and an improved lid connection for the tank.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description. ,y j

In the drawing, wherein is shown only a preferred embodiment of the invention, theletter A may generally designate the tank, which may include a body B having a strengthening ring C at the top thereof upon which a cover or lid D may be removably received; the strengthening ring having an improved gasket `structure E which comprises the subject matter of my copending application, Serial No. 589,273,r illed `January 27, 1932, of which the present application is a division.
The tank, comprising the body B and strengthening ring C as well as the cover D, is preferably of forged metal, although if found advisable either or all of these partsmay be made of cast i metal. Preferably the tank bodyB is a seamless forging, including the cylindrical wall l0,
and a bottom Il which may be formedv as shown in the drawing, or formed with a drain nipple thereon similar to that shown in my co-pending application above referred to, 'and wherein a drainage plug may be disposed. The portion B at its upper endl is screwthreaded at I2 to receive thereon the strengthening ring C which really comprises the top portion' of' the tank l5 body, and upon which the lidD is received. This strengthening ring C is screw threader at its lower reduced annular portion I4 upon the screw threads I2 ofthe tankbodyfB, andl if desired sealing at this screw threaded connection, may l0 be accomplished by utilizingv any permanent sealing `composition `of matter. At vthe connected screw threaded portions of "the tank body B and strengthening ring C there are provided screw threaded outlet openings fl 5 and I6` adapted 15 to receive 'in a permanent sealed relation suitable valve structures l1 and YI8 in any approved manner. The valve structure I 1 is utilized for release of excess pressures and has an outletfor 4relief ofgas from the containerv in event it is 20 desired to remove the lid. The valve structure I8 regulates the feed of carbon dioxide gas to the carbonating apparatus, etc.
The upperportion 20 of the` strengthening ring C is annularly offset and of greater diameter 25 than the 'lower portion I4, defining at the interior of the ring C an annular upwardly facing shelf 2| which may beextended by providing an annular inwardly extending flange 22. I'his v shelf or shoulder 2| is adapted to receive the 30 gasket construction E thereon.
The strengthening ring` C is preferably provided at the interior thereof with a plurality of panels 25 of interrupted screw threads, spaced `.as shown at 26 in Figure 3 of` 4the drawing for 35 the reception of companion panels 21 of screw.A threads on the external periphery of the lid or cover D, which are likewise spaced as shown at 28 in Figure 4 of the drawing.
The cover D includes the annular cylindrical 40 skirt 30 on the outer surface oi?` which the panels 2l of screws threads are provided, and has a dome-shaped top 3l, although the shape of the cover may be other than that shown. A handle 32 is preferably centrally provided on V`the top 45 of the dome. It has a downwardly extending reduced cylindrical shaped extension 33 which at its juncture with the skirt 30 of the cover D deilnesa downwardly facing shoulder 34 adapted to seat on a shoulder Il at the base of the 50 screw threaded panels 25, to limit the downward position of the cover upon the ring C. The screw threads of course may be pitched to wedge the surfaces 34 and 36 into intimate contact 'when the panels of screw threads of the tank ring C and cover D are in engagement. In position the lower surface 34 of the skirt extension 33 terminates above the surface 2| on The gasket structure E preferably includes a Vgasket proper 40, in the formV of an annular channel. It is of distensible material, such as soft rubber or-leather, and U-shaped inA cross "section, to provide a channel passagewayI there` labout. Alpreferably metal shaping ring 41| is employed as part of the gasket structure E, in-
cluding a reduced annular portion 42 which extends into the channel of the gasket proper 40. 'I'he end 44 of the shaping ring located exteriorly ofthe channel of the Vgasket proper is` provided with suitable ports 45 therein which extend through the reduced portion 42 ofthe shaping ring; the latter at its extreme edge havinganl annular groove 41, as has beenv more fully described in my co-pending" application above referred to, faces the channel bottom. The channel-shaped gasket proper 40 may be inverted as shown in the drawing, or placed horizontally on its side. In the specific embodiment shown, the shaping ring 4| rests on the shoulderv 2| and the'gasket proper 4D is inverted, overlapping the juncture line between the cover D andthe tank portion' C, so that upon distension of the gasket the connection of the cover on the tank will be sealed. Theports 4l open into the tank at the space between the bottom f edge of the ilange 33 and the shoulder 2|, as Y shown. The functioning of Vthe gasket has been more specifically described and claimed in my 5 co-pending application above mentioned. l
Ii, desired the strengthening ring may be lecured to the tank body/B'by welding, and it is to be noted that the openings Il and II extend entirely through the strengthening ring and up-V per portion of the tankbody B, to prevent movement of the strengthening ring when the ilttings are in place.
Various changes inv the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without;
departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a liquefler tankor like container the combination of a tank body having an upper portion provided with an upwardly facing 8&5- ket shoulder annularly extending thereabout and on the inner wall thereof, said tankupper portion above said shoulder having kanother cover contact shoulder facing upwardly. the inner peripheral wall of the said upper portion of the tank above the last mentioned shoulder hav-` ing panels of'interrupted screw threads.
2. As an article of manufactures. liquener closure of forged metal including a skirt `pox'- tion and a top wall. theskirt portion iat the lower edge thereof having a gasket seating shoulder and having a reduced depending skirt extension thereon spaced inwardly from the outer peripheral circumference of the 'skirt portion, the outer peripheral surface ofthe'skirt portion being provided with spaced panels of interrupted screw threads.
