CAP FOR TANK FILLER-OPENINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 21, 192.1.
Application led February 19, 1918. Serial No. 218,062.v4
f T0 aZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OLIVER S. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps for Tank` of the character referred to which will be simple in construction, economical in manufacture and effective in use.
In the accompanying drawings:v
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cap embodying my improvements.`
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the -line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing also a portion of the tank and the extended neck about the filler opening.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a slightly modified form.
Referring to the drawings,l represents a portion of a tank of any usual construction, the part of the tank shown being that immediately about the filler opening. The tank at this point is provided with an upwardly extendedv circular flange 2, shown in the present case as integrally formed therewith to form a neck. The upper edge of the flange is bent inwardly in horizontal direction and thence downwardly as indicated at 3; the interior of the portion 3 being screwthreaded to form a threaded opening for the reception of the cap, which will now be described. i
The cap proper is represented by 4 and is provided with a vent opening 5 in the usual way. It also has about its edge a circular right-angled flange 6. Secured to the under side of the cap thus formed is a baille plate 7. The baffle plate is circular in form and has its edges provided with a circular flange 7, having a screw-threaded exterior to conform to the screw-threads on the part 3. The edge of the flange 7a is bent outwardly in a horizontal direction, as indicated at 9, and thence downwardly as indicated at 9, the part 9a being arranged to snugly t the the recess formed by the parts 7a, 9 and 9a is inserted a gasket l0 which, when the cap is screwed to position, impinges the horizontal portion at the upper edge of the neck 2.
so as to form a tight joint.
In the form shown in Figs. Al and 2, there areV also secured to the cap 4a handles l2 formed on the ends of a transverse strip, the intermediate portion of which is secured to the cap plate 4 by the rivets 1l and is formed with a protuberance having aa vent opening l2a op osite the vent 5. l
In ig. 3 a slight modification is shown in which the handle is dispensed with and the central portion of the cap 4 formed of a dome-shape and in this construction the flange 6 of the cap may be knurled if desired to form a, convenient means of grasping the cap for removal or insertion in the neck.
By thearran'gement described it will be seen that any leakage of the gasolene in the tank will have to take place through the two vent openings, but it has been `found in practice'that whatever gasolene splashes through the vent opening 8 will be retained 'in the chamber or space between the baffle plate and thel cap proper, and gradually leak back through the vent opening 8 into thetank, the dish-like configuration at the bottom of the chamber providing for complete drainage of any content which may have passedwithin the chamber. And this configuration is of additional advantage in that there is less likelihood of splashing becoming effective to carry the tank content into the chamber, since the configuration tends to deflect the content away from the vent opening 8 excepting when directed in a substantially upward direction, a direction unusual under the conditions of use. By havin the vertically arranged flange 7a provi ed with exterior screwthreads which may be threaded into the interiorly screwthreaded portion 3 of the neck, a construction is provided which will permit of a comparatively large spaceor chamber between the baffle plate 7 and the cap 4 for the purpose explained, and this construction also allows for the cap proper to be extended outI well beyond the screw threaded portion so that a good leverage is secured for screwing in and unscrewing the cap where the extended handle construction is not employed. Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A'cap comprising a cap member 'hav- 1n an annular right angle flange, and a baffle member having an out-turned flange fitting within the flange of the cap member and secured thereto in nested relation there-` with, said baffle member having a configuration to form a chamber, and being exteriorly screwthreaded, said baille member having a dish-like configuration below the threaded portion.- v 2. A cap' comprising a cap plate having a down-turned annular flange, and a member having an outturned upper edge portionv terminating in a down-turned annular flange fitting within the flange of the cap plate, said member being secured to the cap plate and having a configuration to form an enlarged chamberin the cap, said configuration ,including an intermediate cylindrical wall externally screw-threaded, said member and cap plate being formed with small vent openings.
3. A cap comprising a cap plate having a down-turned annular flange, and a member' having an out-turned upper edge portion terminating in a down-turned annular flange fitting within the flange of the cap plate, said member being secured to the cap plate a`nd having a configuration to `form an enlarged chamber in the cap, said configuration inc luding an intermediate cylindrical wall externally screw-threaded, said'a'ssembly being adapted to provide an annular channel be-l tween the down-turned annular flanges and the threaded wall of said member, said threaded wall being adapted to engage a 4 screwthreaded opening of a receptacle, said
chamber being in open communication with the interior ofthe tank when the cap is in position, and lpacking means in said annulaichannel. 4. A cap comprising a cap plate having a down-turned annular flange, a cup-shaped member having an outturned extended upper edgeport'ion formed with a downturned annular flange fitting within the flange on the cap plate with the outwardly extending portion of cured to the cap plate, said member having a configuration to include an intermediate cylindrical Wall externally screw-threaded, said cap member and cap plate being provided With small vent openings, and a packing ring in the downwardly opening channel of the cap member between its vertical wall and its down-turned annular flange.
5. A detachable closure for the filling openings of portable tanks, said closure comprising a cap plate and a baffle member se cured together and having portions relatively positioned to provide an annular nested relation therebetween, said baflle mem.` ber having an externally threaded cylindrical portion adapted to be threaded into the filler opening and having a bottom of dishlike configuration below the `threaded portion, said cap plate and bottom portion having vent openings with the opening of thebottom pos1tioned at its lowest point, whereby the interior of the closure is of chamber formation adapted to permit drainage through the bottom vent opening.
Inv testimony whereof I have hereunto set hand this 28th day of December, 1917. OLIVER s. KELLY.
