This invention relates to closure devices, and more particularly to a closure of the bayonet type adapted for use with a tubular member such as a filler'neck fora radiator,
gasolene tank or the like.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved form of closure in which the looking member is detachably secured to the body of the closure so as to permit removal and replacement of the gasket; and in which means is provided for positioning and holding the locking member against lateral movement relative to the body of the closure.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and set out in the appended claim.

Referring now to the drawings for a detailed description of my invention, I show a closure of the bayonet type which is adapted to be applied to a tubular member, and connected thereto and disconnected therefrom by rotation relative to said tubular member.
This tubular member is represented in the drawings as a filler neck 10 provided with a flange 11' which may be attached to a container 12, in any suit-able manner. At its outer end this filler neck is provided with a laterally extending flange 13 which serves as a gasket seat. Portions of this laterally extending flange are turned inwardly to form the depending flanges 14, upon which are formed the inclined cam portions 15, which 50 terminate in the dwell portions 16 adjacent 1929. v The closure itself comprises an outer part 19, constructed in the form of a cup-shaped shell having a rounded top portion 20 and a depending annularflange or skirt portion 21, and an inner part 22, which is secured in the 'outer part by crimping the meta-l of the outer part adjacent the junction of the rounded top portion and the annular skirt portion, around the peripheral edge of the inner part, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. This inner part is preferably formed with a depending cupshaped central portion 23, and a laterally extending flange 24, which forms a seat for the gasket 25 which surrounds this depending cup-shaped portion. The flange 24 is preferably provided with a continuous rib 26' which engages theupper side of the gasket when the closure is applied to the filler neck, and firmly presses the gasket into sealing engagement with the laterally extending flange 13 of the filler neck.
For the purpose of retaining the closure upon the filler neck when the closure has been applied to the latter, I provide a looking member 27 having laterally extending resilient fingers 28. When the closure is applied to the filler neck these fingers28 enter the filler neck openings 18, and upon rotation of the closure relative to the filler neck, engage and follow the cam portions 15 and enter the dwell portions 16 in abutting relation with the stop portions 17, thus releasably locking the closure on the filler neck.
The bottom wall of the cup-shaped central portion 23 of the inner part is provided with spaced pairs of downwardly depressed lugs 29, between which the body portion 30 of the locking member is disposed. The body portion of the locking member is shaped to fit snugly between the pairs of opposed lugs so as to prevent lateral movement ot the locking member relative to the inner part when the closure is applied to the filler neck I and rotated thereon. In this instance, as
shown in Fig. 4, the 111 s 29 are so spaced as to accommodate the Iocking member between them in either of two positions 90 apart. In addition to preventing lateral movement of the locking member relative to the inner part, the lugs serve as a means whereby the locking member may be quickly and accurately located, during the assembling of the parts of the closure, thus greatly facilitating this operation.
In closures of the bayonet type, as herein disclosed, in which the locking member is adapted to enter the tubular member, the gasket must be placed between the locking member and the gasket seat provided on the body of the closure. As the gasket employed may be of metal or other inelastic substance, it may be impossible to remove this gasket for renewal if the locking member is rigidly secured to the body of the closure as has been the practice in the forms of closures heretofore constructed. Therefore to permit a damaged gasket to be removed and to be replacedtby a new one, the locking member 27 is held between the spaced lugs 29, and against the bottom wall of the depending portion 23 in such a manner as to permit this member to be disconnected from the inner part. Any suitable means may be employed for detachably holding the locking member in position against the bottom part, but in this instance I show a threaded member 31, which passes through the locking member and the bottom wall of the depending portion 23, and is threaded into a member 32, which is preferably secured on the inner surface of the bottom wall of the depending portion 23. If desired, however, threads may be provided in the metal of the bottom wall itself and the member 31 threaded into this wall without the use of the member 32. This form of construction permits the locking member to be quickly and easily removed when replacement of the gasket becomes necessary.
With-the parts of my closure in assembled position, the inner part 22 is securely re tained in the outer part 19 with a space or chamber 33 between these parts. The bottom wall of the depending portion 23 is provided with vent openings 34 which admit air to the container from the chamber 33 to prevent the formation of a vacuum in the container as the contents of the container are withdrawn. Communication between the chamber 33 and the atmosphere may be provided in the form of a vent opening 35 through the rounded top portion 20, so as to body portion of the locking member and against the depending portion 23 by means of the threaded member 31. Openings 37 are provided in the side wall of this extension member through which the locking fingers 28 extend'l In addition to serving as a bafile for the vent openings 34, and as a housing for the locking member, this extension member serves also to give the closure a neat and finished appearance, and facilitates the centering and application of the closure on the filler neck.
It will now be readily seen that I have provided a form of closure in which the locking member, when assembled in place, is securely held against rotation relative to the body of the closure when the latter is ap )lied to a filler neck and rotated thereon. t will also be readily seen that in my closure this locking member may be readily disconnected from the body of the closure to permit removal and replacement of the gasket.
Vhile I have shown and described the closure of my invention in'a detailed manner, it should be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details shown and described, but regard my invention as including such changes and modifications as do not involve a departure from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, I claim A closure comprising a body having a hollow boss depending centrally thereof, said boss having a bottom wall provided with a plurality of depending arcuately spaced integral lugs, a locking member having a body portion disposed within the arcuate arrangement of lugs and locking fingers extending oppositely between pairs of said lugs, a substantially cup-shaped extension member having a skirt portion telescopically surrounding said central boss, said extension member having a bottom wall provided with a central boss adapted to project within said arcuate arrangement of lugs and to engage the body portion of said locking member, and means for securing said extension member to said boss.
