UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN A. WADERLOW, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL llIOTORS CORPORATION, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF DELAYVARE.
CLOSURE CAP.
Application filed August This invention relates to closure caps and particularly caps of the type used to cover the filling openings in gasoline tanks for automobiles. In these caps it is desirable to incorporate a chamber to receive gasoline splashing upwardly as a result of the motion of the vehicle, this chamber being provided with a vent opening for the admission of air so that the flow of gasoline to the carburetor is not interfered with. The cap herein disclosed follows this general design but is formed in such a way that it may be cheaply made "from sheet metal and conveniently assen'ibled.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a View showing a portion of a conventional gasoline tank with my cap applied tothe filling opening thereof, the cap and the cooperating parts of the tank being shown in section; and
Figure 2 is plan view of Figure 1 with parts broken away.
The reference character 2 indicates a portion of a conventional gasoline tank having a neck 1 which constitutes a filling opening. The cap in which my invention is embodied comprises two interfitting cup-shaped memhere 6 and 8, each comprising top portions 10 and 12 and downwardly projecting flanges 14 and 16, respectively. The central part of the top portion 12 is downwardly pressed as shown at 18 thus spacing it from the top portion 10 providing a chamber 20 which, as before stated, receives the gasoline which is splashed upwardly and prevents its escape to the outside of the tank. This chamber has communication with the interior of the tank through slots 22, the material between 3, 1925. Serial N0. 47,807.
the slots being upwardly pressed. If desired the slots 22 may be formed in the cap 8 at the same time that it is stamped into shape. The annular flange 16 of the mem her 8 is provided with internal screw threads 24 for engagement with external threads formed upon the neck 4. A gasket 26 is preferably interposed between the underside of the cap 8 and the inturned portion 36 formed on the part 4.
I have also preferably secured the inner and outer cap portions together by means of: interlocking flanges 32 and 34 formed at the lower ends of the annular flanges 14 and 16, respectively.
If desired, the annular flange 14 may be shaped to provide outwardly projecting knobs or protuberances 36 for convenience in gripping.
I claim:
A closure cap comprising two interfitting cup shaped members, each comprising a top portion and an annular flange projecting downwardly from the top portion and provided with a radially extending flange portion, said flange portions interlitting to secure said members together, the annular flanges of said members being spaced from each other throughout certain portions of the circumference to provide gripping projections, the central parts of said top portions being spaced to provide a chamber, a vent in each of said central parts, the annular flange of said inner cup shaped member be ing provided with internal screw threads.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
