This` invention relates` to closure devices,-v
and more particularly to an improved form of cap or closure, such as may be used on the filler necks of automobile gas tanks,radia tors and the like. u An object of this invention is to provide a closure having improved and simplified means for connecting the lockingy member to the closure body.
Another ob-'ect of this invention is to provide a closure having improved means for connecting the locking member to the closure body, which will permit the ,locking member to be readily removed and neplaced when a5 damaged.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and set out in the appended claims. l

The closure device of` my invention is of the quick detachable bayonet type adapted to be applied to the opening of a iiller neck and releasably locked on the filler neckby Arelative rotation between the lattery and the closure.
In the drawings illustrating the closure de vice of my invention, I show a.l tubular filler neck 10, having an annular base iange 1l by means of which the neck may be secured to a Huid container 12. At its outer end the wall of the filler neck is bent to provide the laterally extending flange 13, which-serves as a gasket seat. Diametrically opposed portions of the laterally extending iange 13 are turned inwardly toprovide the outer end of the fillerv l neck with the depending i'anges 14. The inner edges of these depending anges are shaped to provide the inclined cam portions 15, which terminate at one end. in the dwells or recesses 16 formed adjacent the stops 17, and at the other end terminate in the openings 18, which are formed in the laterally ex- 'tending flange 13 to afford access to said cam surfaces.
The cap or closure which is applied to the outer end of this filler neck comprises a closure body 19, and a locking member 20 carried 30 by the closure body for releasable locking en# gagment with the cam portions of the filler nec s The closure body itself may assume various shapes, and may be'formed o f two or 35 more parts secured together in any suitable manner. In this instance, however, the closure body 19 is made u p of sheet metalstampings comprising a rounded top or outer part 20, and bottom or inner part 21 constructed 70 inthe form of a plate provided with a central depending boss 22. .The outer part and the inner part are assembled to provide a. space therebetweenv and are permanently secured together by beading the annular portion 23 75 of the outer. part around the annular portion 24 of the inner art. The inner part is preferably provided with an axially extending annular rib 25 which resses the gasket 26 against the outer end o the filler neck to pro- 80 vide an eiicient `seal between the closure and the neck when these parts 'are releasably locked together.
.The locking member 20, which secures the closure to the filler neck, in this instance, is g5 formed with a body portion 27 having laterally extending resillent locking nrs 28. When the closure is applied to the neck the locking fingers enter the openings 18, and upon rotation of the closure relative to the neck the resilient fingers engage and ride upon the cam ortionsf15 until they reach the dwells 16, w ereupon further movement is arrested by the stops 17. For securing this locking member to the closure body I provide a retainin member 29 which' is constructed in the orm of a cup-shaped stampingv adapted vto fit over the central dependingboss formed on the inner part 21. The engagement of the recesses with the lugs 31 prevents rotation. of the retaining member and of the locking member about the axis of 'the boss when the closure is rotated on the filler neckbringing'the locking member into engage ment with the cam portions ofthe neck. The body portion of the locking member, as shown 4in Fig. l, is wider than the openings in the walls of the retaining member, through which the locking lingers extend, so that endwise displacement of the locking member is prevented by the shoulders 33.
In assembling the retaining member upon the central boss of the inner part the resiliency of the metal causes the depressions 32 to snap over and firmly engage the spaced lugs, thereby clamping the locking member between the bottom wall of the retaininglr member and the bottom wall of the central boss. The use of the retaining member 29 for securing the locking member to the closure body permits these parts to be more easily assembled than if the locking member were riveted or otherwise secured to the body and furthermore by this arrangement it will be readily seen that the retaining member, if desired. can be pried loosefrom the central boss when replacement of the locking member becomes necessary.
While I have shown and describedthe apparatus of my invention in a detailed manner, it should. be understood. however, that I do not intend to limit myself with the precise details shown and described but regard my invention as including such changes and modifications as do not involve a departure from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A closure for a tubular member comprising, a body having a central boss provided with circumferentially spaced lugs, a locking member for releasably holding said closure on said tubular member, and means for securing said locking member to said body, said means being provided with spaced lessees recesses arranged for snap engagement with said lugs.
2. A closure for a tubular member coinprising, a body having spaced lugs thereon, a locking member for releasably holding said closure on said tubular member, and a retaining member for securing said lookin;V member and said body together, said retaining member having correspondingly arranged parts Jfor cooperation with said ings.
3. A closure for a tubular member coniprising, a body having a depending central boss, a locking member for releasably holdn n. said closure on said tubular member, and means for securing said locking member in said body including laterally extending lugs on said and a member fitted on f .id boss and having depressions in the wall thereof arranged to receive said lugs.
4. A closure for a tubular member coniprising, a body having a depending portion. a locking member for releasably holding said closure on said tubular member, a retaining member arranged to fit over said dependingV portion for holding said locking member in position with respect to said body, and spaced lugs on said depending portion adapted to cooperate with correspondingly arranged recesses in said retaining member i' or holding the latter on saiddepending portion.
5. A closure for a tubular member comprising a body having a depending part, a locking member for releasably holding said closure on said tubular member, and means for holding said locking member in position with respect to said body comprising a retaining member adapted to fit over said depending part and secured thereto by snap engagement between portions of said depending part and portions of said retaining member.
