CAP CLOSURE.
Application filed March 3, 1922. Serial No. 540,749.
This invention relates to improvements in closures for automobile gasoline tanks and the like.
The objects of the invention are to provide-an improved closure for automobile gasoline tanks, automobile radiators and the like, together with means for providing a bafiied air vent through said closure; to provide such a closurewith spring fingers for locking engagement with a part of the container, together with means for bracing said fingers and for distributing the strain at the base of the fingers; and to provide such a closure which can be manufactured at the 7 least possible ,cost and which at the same time will prove extremely eflicient in its security as a closure and in the reduction of strain and wear upon the parts.
Further objects of the invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.

provided at its upper end with the inward- -ly extending flange portion 2 and the down- 4 wardly extending flange portions 3, the last named flange portions being separated by the recesses. 1.- The lower edges, of the flanges 3 are inclined so as to torm cam faces for engagementby the locklng member of the closurel, as. will later appear, and are provided also 'with the lugs 6 to serve as stops for limiting the rotary movement of the closure thereupon.
The closure comprises a body member having a; depending flange 7 which is adapted to engage about the tubular member 1 and is provided with the annular gasket 8 of cork or other suitable material which engages the top portion of member 1 'so as 10 seal the opening body member is provide with a central domelO, and a spring locking member with a substantially circular body portion 11 is secured tothe closure body member by crimping the base portion of the thereof. The top portion v d; the tubular mem dome 10 about the edge of the body portion 11 of the spring locking member. The crimpmg does not extend completely around said body portion, but free air passages are permitted around the base of the locking fingers 12 of the locking member so as to aiiord communication between the inside of the I closure and the chamber 13 in the dome portion 10, as will later appear. An opening 14: is provided in thetop of the dome 10 for establishing communication between chamber 13 and the outside atmosphere. The fingers 12 extend outwardly and downwardly and terminate in the angular portions 15 which are curved transversely soas to provide a substantially point contact with the.
cam edges of the downwardly extending flanges 3, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3.
Channels or ducts 16' are provided in the closure body member in the region of connection of the base and fingerportions of the locking member, thereby providing a means of communication between the inside of the closure and the chamber 13 thereof. As. thus far described this structure is substantially the same as that disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 524,396, filed December 23, 1921, to
which reference may be had for a more complete understanding of the same.
In the present. improved structure I have struck up the sheared portions 17 at the base of the locking fingers 12, thereby providing openings through the spring lockingmember at the base of the fingers '12 thereof, and at the same time utilizing the shearedportions as a baflie means for the openings to prevent the splashing of gasoline or other contentstherethrough. These sheared portions serve also as a means of'bracing the finger portions 12 at the junction of the finger'portions and the body portion 11 of the spring locking member, Therefore, the strain at the junction of the finger and base portions of the locking member is, as aresultot the present structure, so distributed that the danger of the fin er portions 12 tearing from the springloc ing member is minimized.
In order to apply the present closure to er 1 the spring. fingers 12 are inserted through the recesses 4 of said members and rotary motion is imparted to the closure so as to cause the finger end portions 15 to ride up the cam edges-until the closure has been secured to the tubular member 1 with sufliciently tight interlocking engagement. As explained in the companion application before referred. to, the gasket is relieved of the grinding action which might otherwise be caused by the rotary movement of the closure, by virtue of the yielding of the spring fingers as they ride up the cam edges of the flanges 3.
It is to be understood that in the present structure, the'vents 16 may or may not be used in-connection with the vents provided by the sheared portions 17, and it is to be understood also that dwell portions 18 may be provided in the cam edges of the flanges 3 so as to receive the finger end portions 15 and maintain them in such position.
With the present structure I am enabled to increase the air vent when employed in con junction with the original air vent 16, and at the same time protect the originalvent against the accidental escape of the gasoline or other contents. Furthermore, by bracing the spring fingers and distributing the strain at the junction of the spring fingers and the body portion 11 of the spring locking member, I am enabled to employ either bronze or brass for such spring locking member which means a decided saving in the cost of thematerial for this part of the device.
What I claim is 1. A closure, comprising a closure body, a locking member carried thereby and including a body portion and a resilient finger portion extending out of the plane of the body portion, and re-enforcing means effective at the junction of said finger portion and said body portion.
2. A closure, comprising a closure body, a locking member carried thereby and including a body portion and a finger portion extending out of the planeof the body por' tion, and a reenforcing web integral with the locking member and effective at the junction of the finger portion and the body portion thereof.
3. A closure, comprising a'closure body, a locking member carried thereby and including a body'portion and a finger portion extending out of the plane'of the body por tion, and a reenfo'rcing web connectingsaid finger and body portions and effective at the junction the'reof.
4; A closure, comprising a closure body,
and a'locking member carried thereby, said closure body and said locking member being spacedso as to form an air chamber therebetween, said locking member being provided with a baflied opening providing communication between the inside of the closure and said air chamber, and said air chamber having a vent opening to the outside atmosphere.
5. A closure, comprising a body member, a locking member carried thereby, said body and locking members beingspaced so as to form an air chamber therebet-ween, said body tions, the other member being'prdvided with a locking member including a body portion and finger portions, said finger portions bemg adapted to enter sa d recesses and engage said cam portions upon relative rotation' of said cap and tubular members, said cap and an air chamber, said cap member being provided with a clrcuitous air passage leading from the inside thereof to said chamber,said
locking member having a portion sheared at the base of one of said finger portions and extending inwardly so as to 'form a bafiled opening therethrough and in communication with said first air passage.
-7.- A closure device comprising a tubular member and a cap member, one of sald locking members being-spaced so as to form members having spaced recesses and cam portions, the othermember being provided L:
with a locking member includingv a body portion and'finger portions, said finger portions being adapted to enter said recesses and engage said cam portions upon relative rotation of said cap and tubular members, said capand locking members being spaced so as to form an air chamber, said locking member having a'portion sheared at the base of one of said finger portions and extending inwardly so as to form'a baflied opening leading from the inside of the cap to said air chamber, and said chamber having a vent opening to the outside atmosphere.

A closure, comprising a closure body member, a locking member carried thereby and provided with a body portion'and a re silient finger portion, said closure body member and said locking member having separated portions providing an air chamber therebetween, and means at the junction of the body and finger portions of said locking member for bracing said finger portion, said means also providing an air vent between the inside of the closure and the air chamber thereof, and said chamber also having a vent opening to the atmosphere.

A closure,.comprising a closure body member, a locking member carried thereby and provided with a body portion and a resilient finger portion, said closure body member and said locking member having a separated portions providing an air chamber therebetween, and means at the junction of the body and finger portions of said locking member for bracing said finger portion, said means also providing a baflied, air vent between the inside of the closure and the air chamber'thereof, and said air chamber also having a vent opening to the atmosphere.
12. A closure, comprising a closure body' member and saidlocking member having separated portions providing an air chamber therebetween, and means at the junction of the body and finger portions of said looking member and integral with said locking.
