Abstract

901,978. Valves. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Nov. 24, 1958 [Nov. 23, 1957], No. 36571/57. Class 135. [Also in Group XVII] A fuel-tank cap, of the kind having a sealing member 9, within the cap, to engage, through a gasket, with an annular seat on the filling neck of the tank, is provided with two valves each of which responds to a different pressure-condition within the tank. In Fig. 1, the cap has a coverportion 1 with inturned tabs 2 which co-operate with a bayonet seating on the filler neck, the connection being spring-loaded by the spring- disc 5. Within the sealing member 9 are three inverted cup-members 7, 16, 18, the member 7 being secured to the cover 1 and to the sealing member 9 which includes an annular ridge 11 on which rests a gasket 20. The gasket is sandwiched between annular flanges 17, 19 on the cup-members 16, 18, which are a press-fit one within the other. The gasket is pressed against the seat-ridge 11 by a spring 15 to form a first valve which is openable by an excess vapour-pressure within the tank. The central part 22 of the inner cup-member 18 is upset to leave an annular portion in which are apertures 23. A central aperture 24 in the outer cup-member is aligned with the part 22 and with an aperture 12 in the base of the sealing member 10. Surges of fuel within the tank may cause fuel to impinge on a loose washer 21 resting on the part 22, thereby displacing it upwardly to close the aperture 24; this constitutes the second valve-member. Normal venting of the tank is effected by the apertures 12, 23, 24 and 8 and by a hole 6 in the disc 5. In Fig. 2, the two valves are formed by depressions 41, 42 in a sealing member 36 co-operating with apertured cup-members 43, 50, the anti-surge valve comprising a loose washer 52 and the vapourpressure-responsive valve being a spring-pressed washer 46.
