Abstract
1359859 Filler valves for gas lighters A RACEK 29 June 1971 [1 July 1970] 30484/71 Heading F4F A filler valve for the tank of a gas-fuelled lighter comprises a valve member 4, a resilient valve seat ring 6 and a helical spring 3 guided in a bush 2 which is formed integrally with and extends into the fuel tank from its plastics wall 1 such that, in use, the spring biases the member 4 to make sealing tight contact with the resilient ring 6 while a shank of the member 4 extends through the ring into the entry aperture for a filling conduit 14 so that the valve can be opened by the end of the conduit 14 before the end actually bears in sealing-tight relationship on the seat ring thereby to allow improved venting of the tank during filling. The ring 6 which makes a tight seal with the wall 1 is retained in place by a shoulder 7 of the wall and a retaining ring 8 which in turn is held by a peripheral shoulder of the wall. A conical portion 9 of the bush wall serves to limit the displacement of the valve member 4 and grooves 10 are formed in the bush wall at this point and further grooves 11 are formed in the outer end of the shank of the valve member to increase the passage cross-sectional area. A method of making the valve is also described and Fig. 1 shows in its right half the starting condition and in its left half the finished condition. With the filler entry aperture uppermost the member 4, ring 6 and ring 8 are placed in the aperture and the periphery 12 of the wall bent inwardly to hold the assembly in place. Then the tank is inverted, the spring 3 inserted and the periphery 13 of the bush also bent inwardly so that by this method the member 4 does not have to be inserted against spring force. The tank wall may be transparent.
