To all whom it may concer/n.:
Beitknown that I, JAMES S. Rain, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland` in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improveii'ients in a Tank or Can llosuie, of which the following is a specification.
rThis invent-ion relates to closures and has for its object to provide a device of the character stated which is particularly adapted for usev in connection with the fuel tanks carried by motor vehicles.
The inventionfurther comprisesa closing 'device which may be quickly and conveniently applied to any standard type of fuel tank without necessitating any changes therein, and it further consists inthe provision of a device which may be simply and conveniently removed, and cheap of manufacture. v r
The invention further consists in the. certain construction and combination of parts hereinafter illustrated, described and particularly pointed out in the accompanying claim. n
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings whereinlike reference numerals designate similar parts of reference throughout the, various views, and wherein Figxl is a sectional view through the device as it is attached to the fuel tank, the cutting plane being indicated by the line 1-1 of Fig.. 2;"

The invention as shown comprises a fuel tank 1 supplied with the customary internally threaded bushing 2, and said bushing is provided with an annular flange 3 whereby it may be welded or otherwise fixed t0 said tank. Heretofore a cap or plug has been threaded directly into said bushing to serve as a closure, and as these bushings are usually provided with a fine thread it has been difiicult to start the cap tlierewithin without crossing the threads, this eventually resulting in badly mutilated threads. To overcome this I provide an adapter ring 4 which is formed with a hexagonal flange 5 and which is threaded securely into place within said bushing. This adapter is secured in position with sufficient tightness to.
y with a central opening 6 and a pair of diametricallycpposed vertical slo-ts or channels 7, and leading from opposite sides of each y of said channels are concentric cam faces 8 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A cap or plug 9 provided with an operating handle 10 and an annular fiange 11, in which is\ placed a sealing gasket 12, is provided to close the opening 6 within the bushing or adapter 4, and said cap has secured to its bottom a leaf spring 14, the ends of which project diametrically beyond the outside edge of the cap for a short distance. `The cap is further provided with an air passage 15 by means of which air is allowed to enter the tank and prevent any vacuum there- Within.
In operation and when itis desired to close the opening the cap is so positioned that the extending ends of the spring 14 are in alignment with the vertical channels 7. The cap isthen inserted and rotated, causing the ends of the spring to ride up the inclined cam faces 8. As this rotation continues the cap is drawn in to effectively seal the opening, the operation being very similar to that used for the well known bayonet type of joint. And the cap may be very quickly released and lifted out by reverse motion.
It is evident that the above described construction is capable of being modified in varions ways and while I have shown and described this particular form I do not wish to be limited in the construction of the same further than is required by the state of the art or that which comes Within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
In a closure device of the type having a tubular member with spaced recesses and cam portions and a cap member with gasket means for engagin the top portion of the tubular member with sealin proved cap member provide with a locking member extending across the underside of said cap member and secured thereto, said locking member and cap member being provided with ventl means therethrough, said locking means having spaced individually acting spring end portions extending radially outwardly and adapted to enter the .recesses of the tubular member and engage the cam portions thereof upon relative rotation of said cap and tubular members, whereby when the cap member is applied to the 5 tubular member the yieldin end portions of the looking means will yiel freely and full and cause the gasket means to be engage und compressed between the cap member nnfl tubular member with sealing effect but witliout undue compression of the gasket means. 10
