PATENT GFFICE.
FREDERICK GaWCKER', 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CLOSURE FOB BECEPTAGLE ORIFICES.
Application med February 25, 1921. serial No. 447,843.
To all wko/mit may camera:
Be .it known that I, FREDERICK G. WACKER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certainl new and useful Improvements in Closures for Receptacle Orifices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for closing receptacle orifices, and more particularly to U head proper; Fig. 5 is a detail thereof detached; and Fig. 6 is a detail of the bridge piece.
To the metal-sheet 10 of the barrel a ring 11 may be permanently connected in any suitable fashion as by welding shown at 12,
this rim having a circular chamber 13 terminating in the bottom seat 14 having an orifice 15; The head 16 to close said orifice has an annular liange 17 .to overly the seat and may carry a packing washer 18. This head has a recess 19 to receive the end portion 2O of the screw stem 21 having a suitable wrench-head 22 at its upper end. Permanently to secure the closure head 16 to the stem to permit of its rotation thereon, the stem is formed with a reduced throat 23 into which a small flange portion 24 of the head 16 is spun.
On the stem 21, between the two heads, is a threaded bridge piece 25 having opposed yprojecting lugs 26 that are adapted to coact with bayonet-lock passages formed in the interior wall of chamber 13. Diametrically opposed vertical assages 27 lead partway down the wall o the chamber 13 and with these passages communicate circumerentially extending recesses 28, the front walls 29 of which constitute stops to prevent further forward rotation of the bridge piece and the top surfaces 30 of which adord bearing for the tops of the lugs 26 as shown in Fig. 2. A
To seal the orifice-one runs the threaded bridge piece to the bottom of the steam 21 drops the lugs in vertical channels 27 an rotates the wrench-head in proper direction so that the lugs 26 are carried into the recesses 28 and there held against further rotation, so tliatvthe closure head 16 may be forced into sealing contact with the seat 14.
I claim:
1. The combination of a ring structure having a chamber with a seat iange at its bottom, said chamber having bayonet-lock passages above said flange, a bridge member having lugs to cooperate with said passages, an operating stem threaded through said bridge piece, and a closure head for cooperation with said seat flange, carried by the lower end of said stem and rotatable with respect to but axially movable with said stem.
2. VThe combination with a sheet-metal wall, of a sealing-closure, construction therefor, comprising'a ring structure secured to said Wall and having an opening through said ring including a chamber affording a seat flange at the chamber-bottom, said chamber having bayonet-lock passages above 80 said flange; a bridge member having lugs` to cooperate with said passages; an operating stem threaded through said bridge piece and having, at its lower end, a reduced throat and a larger terminal portion, and a, closure-head for cooperation with said seat ilange, embracingsaid endortion of the stem and engaging in the t roat, whereby said head is carried by the lower end of said stem and rotatable vwith respect to but axi- 90 ally movable with, said stem. f
FREDERICK G. WACKER.
