[Class 30] [See also Group XVII] A device for opening cartons by cutting the walls comprises a blade normally shrouded by a guard, but exposed to perform the cutting, and spring means to shroud the blade. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the device comprises a channel-form frame 1 enclosing a guide 2 adapted to ride over the sealing strip at the mouth of a carton, and a shrouding enclosure 30 in which a blade 6 is pivotally mounted at 4, the blade being moved into cutting position against spring means which normally hold it shrouded, by downward pressure on a finger-piece 7. In the construction shown in Fig. 4 a handle 12 is formed with a flattened end 13 to receive a blade 14 held in place by a screw 15. A guard 17, pivoted to the handle at 16, is provided with a stop 31 which in the cutting position of the appliance deflects a leaf spring 21, which effects the shrouding of the blade when the cutting operation ceases. A slidable pointed guide piece 19, slotted to permit the passage of the blade and serving as a safety catch, may be provided, or adjustable guide elements may be mounted on the guard member 17. The handle is preferably fitted with a pointed device 22, which may, as shown, be detachable and reversible, for piercing holes in the cartons &c.
