Abstract
680,656. Bale-band cutters. ELLIN (FOOTPRINT WORKS). Ltd.. T. R. March 1, 1951 [March 1, 1950], No. 5230/50. Class 30 A bale-band cutter comprises a flatbottomed, lower jaw, tapered to an edge at its leading end for insertion under a band, and an upper jaw pivoted in the lower jaw for shearing movement along one side of it, each jaw being integral with a handle, and the lower handle, integral with the upper jaw, extending at such an angle as to leave room for the operator's fingers, above the plane surface on which the flat bottom of the lower jaw rests, when the bale is engaged between the jaws. As shown, the member 2 of the cutter comprises a handle 3, projecting from the jaw 1, at an angle of 30 degreees to 45 degrees to the flat bottom 4 of the jaw. The handle 8, of the leg 6, is shaped so as to be clear of the surface 9 when the cutter is opened sufficiently to receive the bale band, and is doubled back at 17, to provide a stop 10 which strikes a projecting part 11 of the handle 3 when the cutting edges have passed each other but before the jaw '7 penetrates below the surface 4 of the jaw 1. To permit full closing of the jaws, the jaw 7 is shorter than the jaw 1. A plate 13 of fibre or plastic material is secured to the jaw 7 to grip the cut-off end of the band. A notch for cutting banding wire is provided in the jaw 7.
