Abstract

Tetraaroylpyrenes are obtained by the action of excess of an aroylating agent on pyrene in presence of a carrier and a diluent. According to an example, pyrene is treated with benzoyl chloride in presence of ferric chloride and acetylene tetrachloride to give 3 : 5 : 8 : 10 tetrabenzoylpyrene, which product may be converted by treatment with a chlorinating agent to a chlorine addition product which gives a vat dyestuff for cotton by fusion with caustic potash and quinoline, producing yellow-brown tints. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 specifies other aroylating agents, viz. chloro- or bromobenzoyl chlorides, anisoyl chloride, and naphthoyl chloride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
