Abstract
446,539. Transmitting-mechanism for brakes. GRIST, G., c /o Auto - Mower Engineering Co., Ltd., Bath Road, Norton St. Philip, near Bath. Jan. 17, 1935, No. 1658. [Class 103 (i)] In timber-wagons and other road vehicles in which the distance between the front and rear axles can be varied, the flexible member by which the brakes are operated is so arranged that its effective length is automatically varied to compensate for variation of the wheel base. The timber-wagon shown comprises a beam 10 supported by a front bogie carriage 12 and a rear carriage 14 slidable along the beam by a socket 18. The brake-operating cable 36 is attached at 42 to the beam 10, passes around pulleys 44, 46 on the frame of the carriage 14 and on the sliding brake bar 34 thence around a floating pulley 40 and is attached at its other end to the sliding brake-bar 30. The pulley 40 is connected by a chain 38 to the operating lever and the bars 30, 34 are connected by links to the operating arms 24, 26 of the front and rear brakes. When the carriage 14 is shifted along the beam, the effective length of the cable, that is, from the chain 38 to the bar 34 is also changed without varying the actual length of the cable. In a modification, the cable 36 is duplicated, each cable being directly attached to one front brake arm 24 and passing around a pulley on a rear brake arm 26.
