446,468. Drying or cooling finelydivided materials. BENNET, R., Mere Heath House, Davenham, near Northwich, Cheshire, and MACGILLIVRAY, J. C., c/o Fawcett, Preston, & Co., Ltd., York Street, Liverpool. Sept. 11, 1935, No. 25233. [Classes 29 and 34 (ii)] Solid materials in small pieces or finelydivided pass, in co-current or countercurrent with a stream of gaseous drying or cooling medium, down over a vertically arranged helix or helices reciprocated longitudinally and /or rotatably, and closely surrounded by a stationary casing. The materials are fed down a shoot 7 to a double helix 5 in a casing 1 having an outlet 8 for materials and inlet and outlets 9, 10 for air, which may pass in either direction through the apparatus. The helix is sharply oscillated through some 30 degrees by cams 11, 12 on a driven shaft 13, the cams engaging the ends of an arm secured to the vertical shaft carry - ing the helix. The helix may be formed of a series of stepped plates after the manner of a spiral staircase, and may have a lip at its periphery to retain the material. Automatic or hand knockers may be provided, internally or externally.
