Abstract

446,038. Differential gearing; clutches. ADAMS, T..L., 2450, 6th Avenue West, Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. March 5, 1935, No. 6901. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] The differential, gearing of a motor vehicle may be locked when desired by the driver, the locking means being released automatically when the necessity therefor no longer exists. Within the housing 1 are the aligned axles 2 having the usual gears 3 engaging pinions 4 on the differential casing 5. This casing at one side is journalled in the housing 1 and, at the other side, has a sleeve 6 loose on the axle 2 this sleeve being loosely surrounded by another sleeve 8 keyed to the axle 2. Sleeve 6 is integral with a clutch disc 7, and sleeve 8 with a clutch disc 9. The discs may be locked together by a clutchengaging member 11 in the form of a ring with internal projections 13 and movable axially by a cranked rod 17, 18, ring 14, pins 15 and yoke lever 16. The rod 17, 18 is loaded by a spring 21, Fig. 3, tending to lock the gear, but this is prevented by a stronger spring 22 which pushes out a button connected by wire 25 to the cranked rod. By pushing in the button, the spring 21 is allowed to act to lock the gear, the spring 22 retracting the clutch-engaging member when the running conditions permit.
