Abstract

384,513. Controlling motor vehicles. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd., 88, Regent Street, London.-(Assignees of Sheldrick, L. S. ; 1424, River Lane, Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A.) March 22, 1932, No. 8550. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1931. [Class 79 (v).] A vehicle transmission system comprises a one-way isolating clutch 43, Fig. 2, between the change gearing and the road wheels, which clutch is adapted to be locked out by a toothed disc 45 splined on the driven shaft 13 of the change gearing. The disc 45 is operated automatically to lock the free-wheel clutch out when reverse drive is put in, and the free-wheel clutch is adapted automatically and preferably resiliently to be rendered operative again when the gear control lever is moved out of " reverse " into " neutral." When a gear 30 is slid to the right into mesh with a reversing idler 29 by a conventional shift lever (not shown) it strikes the pin 47 and thrusts the parts into the position shown in Fig. 7 in which the one-way clutch 43 is locked out of the disc 45. A spring 50 has thus been compressed so that on the shift lever being returned to neutral, the disc 45 is disengaged to allow the free-wheel clutch to function. The spring 50, which is part of an independent control of the lock disc 45, engages between a sleeve 48 integral with the striker 46 and a piston 52 on a plunger 51 locked by a poppet 62. A wire 55, Fig. 2, fast at 54 to the plunger 51 leads through a sheath 56 to a lever 60, Fig. 4, secured to the vehicle instrument board 58. On raising the lever 60, the plunger 51 moves to the right of Fig. 2, and since it engages the striker positively at 53, Fig. 7, the disc 45 is moved positively into locking position from which it is removable only by the spring 50. The lever 60 is lockable in two positions by the poppet 62 at the other end of the wire.
