[Classes 76 and 96] [See also Group IX] In the production of fibrous material from disintegrated skins, the skins are first brought into a condition suitable for disintegration by treatment with swelling agents, e.g. milk of lime, and are then mechanically disintegrated, further swelled, e.g. with acids, and after or simultaneously with this second swelling are further mechanically disintegrated or shredded. A de-swelling treatment followed by expression of water may be interposed between the first disintegration and the second swelling. The final product may be tanned or worked up to produce artificial leather or gut, or sausage skins, or may be dried.
